When Should I Start Drawing My Own Retirement Benefits?

Hi Larry,
I am currently employed with an annual income close to $130 K. I am also taking spousal benefits but for a very small amount $300 per month. I am beyond my retirement age but not sure if starting taking my social security benefits when turn 67. What is your advise on it?

Hi,

You would probably be better off waiting until age 70 to switch to your own record, but it's largely a personal choice. Keep in mind that your wife's potential widow's benefit will be based on your full benefit rate inclusive of delayed retirement credits (DRC), so by waiting until age 70 to start drawing on your own record you would not only be assuring yourself a higher monthly rate for life, but also your wife in the event that you die first.

You may want to consider using the maximization software available on this website in order to compare your options and decide for yourself which strategy is best.

Best, Jerry
