Why Won't I Get A Check Until 2 Months After I Turn Age 62?

I was 62 in September, but my benefit doesn't begin until November. You informed Mr. Kotlikoff on 10/15/16 that a benefit is received the month following ones birthday. Please explain the discrepancy. Thanks.

Hi,

You must be age 62 for an entire month in order to qualify for Social Security retirement benefits, so unless you were born on September 1st or 2nd your first potential month of eligibility for retirement benefits would be October (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0300201001). And, Social Security benefits are normally paid in the month following the month for which the benefits are due.

Best, Jerry
