Will The Child We Adopt In The Philippines Receive Benefits From His Father's Social Security?

Good day sir, I am a filipino citizen and my husband is receiving SSDI. We are planning to move back home to the Philippines to live there for good after i get my citizenship. We are also planning to adopt a child when we go home. My question is:
1) will the child receive dependents benefit even if she lives in the Philippines , never came to the USA and doesn’t have social security number.
2) will i receive any spousal benefit after my husband dies?? I am 42 yrs old now and have only worked for 2 yrs in the USA and we plan to go home next year

Hi,

No, the child that you and your husband plan to adopt couldn't be paid child benefits from Social Security based on the circumstances you describe. You may eventually be able to qualify for spousal or survivor benefits while living in the Philippines, but only if you've been married to and lived with your husband in the U.S. for at least 5 years. In order to potentially qualify for spousal benefits while your husband is living, you'd have to be at least age 62 or have a child in your care who does qualify for child benefits and who is either under age 16 or is disabled. Or, to potentially qualify for widow's benefits you would have to be at least age 60, or at least age 50 and disabled.

Best, Jerry
