Will I Lose My Benefits If I Remarry?

I want to get married. I'm receiving social security, so is my future husband. will I loose any benefits when I get married?

Hi,

That depends on what type of benefits you're receiving. If you're receiving retirement benefits based on your own record, getting married wouldn't have any effect on those benefits. Nor would widow's benefits terminate due to a remarriage that occurs at age 60 or later.

However, if you receive divorced spousal benefits, those benefits would terminate if you get married unless your future husband is receiving certain types of Social Security auxiliary or survivor benefits (https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0300202045).

To be safe, you may want to check with Social Security to ask them how getting married would affect your benefits.

Best, Jerry
