Would I Qualify For Monthly Social Security Benefits If I Marry?

We are both 71. I do not receive Social Security - not eligible. I do receive Medicare benefits. He receives Social Security and Medicare. If we marry, will I receive monthly Social Security? Survivors benefits?

Hi,

It sounds like you could qualify for monthly spousal benefits after you've been married for at least a year (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.03/handbook-0305.html). And, you may qualify for survivor benefits if your spouse dies before you and you have been married for at least 9 months (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0401.html).

However, if you happen to receive a government pension based on your work that was exempt from Social Security taxes, your pension could cause some or all of your spousal or survivor benefits to be withheld. For more about this provision, refer to this Social Security publication: https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10007.pdf.

Best, Jerry
