Can Anything Be Done For My Father To Receive Credit for His Past Self-Employment Earnings?

My father (71) is a small business owner. For many years his accountant made sure my father paid his taxes so he doesn't incur any IRS penalties but didn't file the actual tax returns,

I am not sure of the details, but my father says the above has cost him a decent amount in Social Security benefits. Something to the effect that the information on what he paid the IRS was not sent over to the SSA.

He went down to the SSA multiple times with data to prove his payments. Finally, they did something for him but they only did a look back of 3 years. My father says they . . . Read More

When I Reach Full Retirement Age Will I Receive Half Of My Husband's Age 66 Amount Or Half Of His Benefit Amount At The Time I Apply?

My husband is 70 now , got full retire benefit. I am 63 (1959) now. When I am reaching full age , I will receive 1/2 spouse benefit of my husband 66 or in his current benefit of that time.

Hi. Assuming that you don't qualify for Social Security retirement benefits on your own record, then you would be eligible for 50% of your husband's primary insurance amount (PIA) if you apply for spousal benefits at your full retirement age (FRA). A person's PIA is equal to their Social Security retirement benefit rate if they start drawing their benefits at full . . . Read More

Am I Entitled To Half Of My Husband's Monthly Income In Addition To What I Receive?

I am receiving a small pension through Ohio STRS each month, but it is so small I continue to work at my part-time job as a tutor. I also should be receiving just under $600 each month from Social Security, but they withhold all but $236 of it and call it a "windfall" which is truly ludicrous. They keep all but $89 of the $236 to pay for my MediCare, and I pay an additional $39.50 out of pocket for a ridiculous penalty fee for not having one year of prescription coverage on my Medicare Advantage plan, plus a full-coverage dental plan. My husband and I both started withdrawing . . . Read More

Is There A Good Reason For My Wife To Wait Until Her FRA To File?

When should my wife file for SS benefits?
I am planning on taking SS beginning in Jan 2023, which is a couple of months before I turn 68. My wife is 2 years younger than me and her benefit based on her work record is a little less than what her spousal benefit would be. Is there a good reason for her to wait to file until her FRA in Nov, 2023 rather than filing when I do in Jan, 2023?
Thank you.

Hi. Claiming benefits 10 months prior to full retirement age (FRA) would cause your wife to receive a monthly benefit rate that's somewhere between . . . Read More

Will I Lose My Disability Benefits If I Earn Money From Selling Real Estate?

i am on Perm disability but hold a real estate license, if earn $$ from selling real estate will i lose my perm benefits, is there a way of not losing benefits through an llc maybe?

Hi. It's certainly possible for Social Security disability benefits to be suspended or terminated if the disabled individual returns to work, but whether or not that would happen in your case depends on how much you work and earn. You would generally need to perform what Social Security defines as substantial gainful activity (SGA) in order to lose your disability benefits. . . . Read More

How Can I Check With SSA To See Whether Or Not They Have Accurate Information About My Non-Covered Earnings?

Hi Larry, Every February I log in to the MySocialSecurity website to make sure thta the SSA has recorded our last year of earnings correctly. All well on that front. However, for the first time I now see a message saying "Fact Sheet: You Have Earnings Not Covered By Social Security". Presumably the SSA thinks I have some earnings for which I did not pay any FICA tax. I can think of several possible reasons for this:
(1) I did work in the UK for 17 months (1999-2000), and I did make contributions towards a UK pension plan while there. However, after 17 months I got a new . . . Read More

Is It True That My Wife Can File For Spousal Benefits Now And Wait Until Age 70 To Claim Her Own Benefits?

I will begin collecting my social security benefit this month at age 70. My wife was born in March 1955, so she is past her FRA. She would like to file now, at which time her spousal benefit based on my earnings will be higher than her own benefit would be currently. However, if she waits until age 70, her benefit based on her own earnings will be greater because of the Delayed Retirement Credits she would accrue.
The local social security office told her she can file now for spousal benefits, and file again at age 70, when she would receive the increase based on her own . . . Read More

Hi. No. The day of the month on which your benefit is paid is determined by the Social Security regulations and can't be voluntarily changed. The regulations that determine your payment date were established by Congress in 1997. Since that time, the only people who are paid their Social Security benefits on . . . Read More

Can My Wife And Daughter Switch Their Benefits To My Account When I Apply For My Benefits?

My 30 year old daughter is childhood disabled and initially claimed benefits on my wife's disability and now her retirement. Wife is 69. I'm 3 years younger than my wife (BD 1955) and will file at age 70.
Can my daughter & wife switch their benefits to me once I file assuming all three benefits are under the family maximum and what % of my benefit would they receive now and ultimately as survivors?
