Should My Widow's Benefit Go Up Now That I'm 72?

I started drawing my widow's social security benefits at. 62 I'm now 72 will my check increase. Does the social security office know my age now???

Hi. No. When you start drawing benefits prior to your full retirement age (FRA), the reduction for age that's applied to your benefits is permanent for any months that you're paid benefits prior to FRA. Therefore, your benefit rate doesn't go up when you reach a subsequent age other than for cost of living (COLA) increases.

And yes, since you're drawing benefits, Social Security has your age and date . . . Read More

Can My Step-Mother Receive My Deceased Father's Benefits If Their 'Marriage' Was Non-Legally Binding?

Can my step mother receive my deceased father's SS benefits if they were "married" in a non-legally binding church ceremony 11 years ago? She is also an Oregon PERS recipient.

Thank you in advance!

Hi. I can't be sure based on that limited amount of information. A person must normally have been legally married to the deceased worker in order to be able to qualify for widow's benefits. Social Security recognizes state law when determining whether or not a legal marriage existed, so your step-mother likely wouldn't be able to qualify unless her . . . Read More

Can I Collect My Social Security Retirement Benefits While Waiting To See If My Disability Claim Is Approved?

I'm 63. My retirement benefit would be approx $2000 a month. I need to file for SS disability as well. Question-CAN I COLLECT MY $2000 while waiting to see if my disability claim is approved. I keep hearing about "reduced social security". What is that? My disability would add an additional $495 a month. I can't live without any income while waiting for disability approval.

Hi. Reduced Social Security refers to starting benefits prior to full retirement age (FRA) at a rate that's reduced for age. Basically, the earlier that you start drawing Social . . . Read More

Does Receiving Social Security Benefits Affect SNAP Benefits?

Does receiving social security benefits affect SNAP benefits

Hi. My area of expertise is limited to Social Security benefits. I have no special knowledge of the SNAP benefit program, but since the the SNAP program is needs based I assume that Social Security income is counted when determining if a person is eligible for SNAP benefits (https://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/eligibility/elderly-disabled-special-rules...?).

How Can My Friend's Daughter Get Access To Her Social Security Funds At Wells Fargo Bank?

I am writing on behalf of a retired friend. He married late in life, had 3 children when he began drawing SS retirement benefits in 2010. The 3 kids have received SS monthly deposits into their own savings account, but linked to the father. The kids are now over 18 years old. The family relocated to France in 2010.

The eldest child recently returned to the U.S. for the first time, to begin college, but Wells Fargo will not permit her to withdway any funds, through any means whatsoever. She is not able to pay her first semester tuition as planned. WF doesn't seem to honor . . . Read More

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Actually, you can potentially qualify for widow's benefits as early as age 60, although your benefit rate would be reduced for age if you start drawing prior to your full retirement age (FRA). Your best strategy for claiming benefits depends on a) the amount of your potential widow's benefit, and b) . . . Read More

Can Or Should I Draw From My Deceased Husband's SS Now?

My husband just recently died at age 58, I am 63 and I still work full-time. Can I or should I draw from on his SS benefits as his widow?

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Whether or not you could collect benefits depends on how much you're earning. Social Security would need to withhold $1 of your benefits for each $2 that you earn in excess of $18,960 this year, so if you earn too much you may not be able to draw any benefits.

Regardless of how much you earn, though, you would likely at least qualify for a one-time death benefit of $255. If you haven . . . Read More

Did I Qualify For Social Security Or Not?

My children’s father died 4 years ago! He wasn’t working a full time job. My daughter qualified for social security because she was only 13. My son being that he just turned 18 and was going to college full time , was not eligible! A case worker also suggested that I apply for spousal sosial security , yet when I mentioned it to the next case worker she laughed and said no, you don’t qualify! And that was that! Did I qualify for social security or not.

Hi. Possibly, but only if you were married to the deceased at some point. A mother or father can qualify . . . Read More
