Will The Settlement From My Medical Class Action Suit Affect My SS Benefits?
Larry,
I’m 65 on SS. I will be receiving a class action medical settlement, will the settlement affect my SS benefits and will I have to pay back my SS income ?
Regards,
Max
Hi Max. No, proceeds from a legal settlement wouldn't affect your Social Security benefits or require you to repay any Social Security benefits. The income from your settlement could, though, cause some or more of your Social Security benefit to be taxed as income (https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/ . . . Read More

Do I Need To Do Anything?
Thanks for everything you do. I received SS survivor benefits on my late husband's account for four years. His birthday was 7/4 and the payment date was the second Wednesday of each month. Last year, at age 70, I started getting SS on my own account and my birthday is 6/21. The payment date never changed. I really don't care either way. Do I have to do anything?
Hi. No, I don't think you do. Social Security would normally pay you your own retirement benefits on the 4th Wednesday of the month based on your birthday, but Social Security may have a policy of . . . Read More

Did I Receive A Bill From Social Security Because Of An IRA Withdrawal Or Because I Owe The IRS Money?
I owe the IRS a sum of money declared “non-collectible” in 2020.
I began collecting social security benefits in 2018 when I was 65. In 2020, after the taxes were declared non-collectible, I received a bill from social security for $3428.
Was this based on my increased income (IRA withdrawal) for that year or because I owe the IRS money?
Hi. I doubt if it's either of those things. IRA withdrawals would have no effect on your Social Security benefits, and if the IRS wanted to collect a tax obligation from your Social Security benefits the tax . . . Read More

Will I Continue To Receive Survivor Benefits Until I Start Getting My Own Benefits?
I'm receiving survivor benefits (2nd Wed of the month) will apply for my own social security (full retirement age August 28th) to start in January. My question is will I continue to receive my survivor benefits until that time and if so what happens to the 2 week difference in January since my check will come on the 4th Wed. I have used your program in the past and it changed my life. At 60 I called SS they told me I'd make @ $1000 per month which was not enough to get by on. A few months later I ordered your program. According to it I'd receive @ $1500. Made an appointment and . . . Read More

Does Social Security Stop Doing SS Statements Once You Start Benefits?
Dear Mr. Larry,
I am 65 and plan to take my SS next year at FRA. I view my SS statement every month on the SSA website. I read another post on your website where someone said they could no longer see their SS statement after they started SS at age 70. My question is, does the SSA quit doing SS statements once you start benefits, even at FRA? If so, do you get some kind of a notice or statement online or in the mail showing your new benefit amount each year for COLA increases?
Thanks, Wilbert

What Options Do I Have?
I just started So sec retirement and got taken off SSI. I was fine with SSI. I live alone and was receiving enough to live on. Now with Soc.Sec. I'm subject to all sorts of garnishments and I must pay for medicare. i have an old child support case in arrears due to my being disabled. After chils support and medicare deductions, I'm left with $347.00 to live on. Is it legal to garnish so much the operson will be forced into homelessness? With SSI I was receiving$794.00 SSI and $87.00 SSP for a total of $881.00 which was enough for me to live on. Now I don't know what to do. . . . Read More

If I Start Drawing Social Security Retirement Benefits At Age 62 What Happens When My SSDI Claim Is Approved?
Hi Larry,
Someone asked about collecting social security while waiting for SSDI approval. It's at the link below.Part of your answer didn't make sense to me. I don't understand why in the example the guy has to wait until he's 66 to collect disability benefits.
I'm 61. I became my ssdi application in 2020. There's a decent chance it won't be approved until after my 62nd birthday. My FRA is 67.
Assming the one date is determined to be in 2020, If I start taking reduced benefits at 62, what happens when the SSDI claim is approved?
Thanks,

Can I Still Get Disability Benefits If I'm Already Collecting Social Security?
I'm collecting social security right now and I was collecting unemployment but I had to stop unemployment 2 months ago because I end up getting that stroke so that's when they're wonder if I could like disability for a while until I'm better cuz I can't get unemployment because I can't look for work
Hi. I'm sorry to hear about your stroke. You couldn't collect both Social Security retirement benefits and Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits at the same time, but if you became disabled more than 5 months prior to reaching your full retirement age (FRA . . . Read More

Is My PIA Available Online?
I delayed my retirement benefits for exactly 4 years from age 66 (FRA) to 70, and will soon start collecting. I’m trying to locate my PIA to estimate spouse’s benefit. Is it on my Social Security Statement or online? If not, is my current PIA simply my benefit at age 70 reduced by 32% (4 years of delayed credits)?
Hi. For some reason Social Security stops providing benefit estimates online to people who are currently getting benefits. But, yes, you could calculate your approximate primary insurance amount (PIA) by dividing your age 70 rate before . . . Read More

Why Didn't My Daughter's Benefit Rate Go Up When Her Older Sibling Turned Age 18?
I’m curious as to why my daughter’s survivor benefits did not go up when her middle turned 18? When the oldest child turned 18 the middle kid and my daughter’s benefits went up. The amount that it went up made it seem like they were getting the oldest kids check split between the 2 of them. My daughter is the youngest and now the only one left collecting and it didn’t go up when the middle kid turned 18?
Hi. The maximum rate that a surviving child can be paid is equal to 75% of the deceased worker's primary insurance amount (PIA). Up to 2 surviving children . . . Read More
