If I'm Not Working Will My Benefit Rate Continue To Increase?
I am wondering if I do not start taking my Social Security payment the month I retire, but wait until later--I won't be contributing to Social Security since I won't be working--so my question is, if I am not contributing, but wait to start my payments, will the payments increase? Do they increase according to the projections shown on the website Benefit Estimate Table? I called a Social Security representative who did not understand my question. Thank you.

Should I Have Been Able To Collect Benefits On My Ex-Spouse's Record?
After nearly 20 years of marriage and having 3 children together my ex spouse and I divorced. In 1994 he started getting SSDI. Two of our children were still under 18 so they got income from his SSDI. I as his ex spouse got nothing. Was i suppose to have been able to collect from his SSDI too? He was 40 and i was 40 at the time. In 2000 I remarried. He died in 2007
Hi,
No, it doesn't sound like you could have qualified for any benefits. In order to receive benefits on the Social Security record of a living ex-spouse, you must be unmarried and be at . . . Read More

Does My Application Date Affect The Fact That I Want To Receive My Benefits After My 70th Birthday?
I will turn 70 May of this year (2021). I received a letter from SS which included a link to begin the process for applying for benefits. In doing so (online), I was informed the following. "We may use 01/06/2021 as the official date of your application for Social Security benefits. In order to use 01/06/2021, we must receive the signed application by 07/07/2021 or you may lose Social Security benefits."
Does using the application date, in this case 1/6/21, effect the fact I want to received my benefits after my 70th birthday in May ?

Hi. I recently lost my husband to covid he was 56. I called as. And they said when I reach 60 I can start collecting. He also had a life insurance policy. That makes me go over the 18,000 a year limit they gave me. Where does my husband's money go that they took out for all these years. Will I not ne entitled to any of it. Does it change at full retirement age. And I can make over that amount. Can I have my kids receive it at what his full retirement age was. I cant see how they can just keep it after all these years of him paying into it

Could I Qualify For Disabled Adult Child's Benefits From My Father If My Husband Is Approved For Disability Benefits?
I’ve been disabled before age 22. I’m currently married. If my husband gets approved for social security would I be able to get adult child disability from my father who recently passed away? I’ve read you have to be unmarried but if you marry someone on social security you have a protected marriage and can get adult child disability. I didn’t know how it worked when your already married and during the marriage your spouse get social security if I’d be eligible to draw off my dad social security since I’ve been disabled since 18. I’ve never drawn off my dads social security . . . Read More

Am I Required To File For My Own Benefits At Age 70?
I have been collecting SS since I turned 66 1/2 as a widow (survivor) under my ex-husband's account. I did not retire until August 2019 from my federal job. I have turned 70 (Dec 2020). Am I now required to switch to my own account as I am now 70 yrs. old? There is a substantial difference between what I have been receiving and what I would receive under my own ss. Do I have the option of continuing on my survivor account?

Will My Son Keep Getting Benefits On His Father's Record When He Turns 18?
My 17 year old Handicapped child is receiving SSDI because his 62 year old father is on Disability. When my son turns 18 will he be able to continue against his father (which is higher amount) or will he have to begin his own claim. Thank You
Hi,
Just to clarify, Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits are only payable to people who qualify based on their own work and earnings history. I assume that what your son receives are child's benefits based on his father's work and earnings. Those benefits can continue indefinitely regardless of your son' . . . Read More

Is There Anything That My Fiancée Will Qualify For If We Marry?
I am a widower. 7 yrs now. My daughter draws SSA off my late wife’s work and I draw 4 months a year because of my income. I met someone who is a disabled adult child who is drawing off her fathers work record. We are getting married. She receives SSDI and Social security. When we get married I understand I will lose what I draw from my late wife. I also understand that my fiancé will lose her SSDI. But she is still disabled. Is there anything she would qualify for? Would she be able to keep her Medicare and Medicaid? Will she have to apply for disability all over again? Thanks . . . Read More

Why Do They Require You To Be Married For Ten Years To Get Benefits From An Ex-Spouse?
First, why did "they" put a cap of ten years married, to be able to get ex spouse social security benefits? I was married for 9 years and my ex husband is a millionaire. Can I appeal the ten years, and get 5 years and half of his social security benefits, hiring an attorney to appeal?
Hi,
Actually, in the original Social Security law that established divorced spousal benefits, the duration of marriage requirement was 20 years. Congress reduced the requirement starting in 1979 to 10 years, but they haven't changed the rule since then. I have no idea . . . Read More
