Will My Sister Lose Her Benefits If She Sells Her Home And Buys Another House?

My sister is on SSDI and AHCCCS if she sells her home and buys another house with me will she lose her benefits?

Hi,

I'm only able to answer questions about Social Security benefits. I have no idea what AHCCCS is, but selling and/or buying a home would have no impact on a person's Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits.

Best, Jerry

How Can I Calculate My PIA?

I was born in 1951
How can I calculate my PIA and does the amount increase if I don’t start claiming benefits until age 70
From age 66 to 70 I have continued to work and my wages exceed the maximum social security wage amount
thank you

Hi,

First you'd need your full Social Security covered earnings history, and then you need to wage-index each year prior to the year in which you turned age 60. The indexing factors for people born in 1951 can be found here: https:// . . . Read More

Can My Earnings Credits Be Transferred To My Wife?

I retired with civil service retirement and have 30 quarters of social security and don't plan on adding any more quarters. Is there some way my wife can add these 30 quarters to her social security for her retirement. Thank you.

Hi,

No. Social Security earnings credits earned by one person cannot be shared with or transferred to another person.

Do I Need To Report To Social Security If I'm On Social Security Disability And I Do Self-Employment Work From Home?

Hi Larry, I'm on social security disability and I was just wondering that if I do a work from home self employment , like on a website selling digital art that I make but I don't make any earnings, do I still need to report it to s.s or do I report it if I make a sale? Because its not a hourly or salary based its a purchase based I guess.
Thank you

Hi,

If what you're doing would be classified as self-employment for income tax purposes, then yes you'd need to report the activity to Social Security. Being self-employed means that you're involved . . . Read More

Can I Start Drawing My Social Security Now At Age 54 With My Doctor's Approval?

Last worked full time in 2011. Received un-employment 5-2011 to 5-2013. (While job searching, fell ill, with no diagnosis until)... Diagnosed with Early onset Parkinson's in 2013 at age 47. Attempted part time work from 6-2013 to 6-2015. Here's where I made my grave mistake!! I came to a crossroad where I made a decision to take in my dying father and did not file for disability in the time frame allowed I'm guessing. Always assumed if you paid into it for all my working years, that it would be there when I needed it. After father passed and I was free to try the workforce . . . Read More

Why Can't I Draw Anything From My Deceased Husband's Social Security?

Why is it that I can not draw a dime from my deceased husbands pension after 29 years of marriage and he paid into Social Security? Why am I being penalized for working to help provide for our family and retiring with a pension after 32 years????? Where does his money go if not to me?????

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

The surviving member of a couple can only be paid up to the higher of a) their own benefit rate, or b) their deceased spouse's benefit rate, not both. Therefore, assuming that you're already drawing your own benefits, the only way . . . Read More

Can My Nephew Get An Additional Payment For Acting As My Caregiver?

I'm 65 At my benefit, retired, and also an amputee with military support from (a) spouse. My nephew a SSI beneficiary can be my caregiver. Can't my nephew get an additional payment?

Hi,

Social Security is the only program that I have expertise in, so I wouldn't know if your nephew might be eligible for benefits from any other programs. All I can really tell you is that if your nephew is acting as your caregiver, it wouldn't make him eligible for any Social Security benefits. Nor would it cause his Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payment amount to . . . Read More

Do You Know Why My Husband And I Received Extra Payments From Social Security?

My husband and I each received an additional (smaller amount) deposit this week from Social Security. We have no idea why. When I noticed the first deposit I assumed it was some type of error. Then I found the second. These deposits go to two different financial institutions. I tried calling the SSA but the hold time was more than I could manage that day. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Hi,

There are a number of reasons why you may have received an extra payment from Social Security. It's likely an adjustment payment of some sort, and the most . . . Read More

Can I Apply For My Own Benefits And Also Get Part Of My Deceased Spouse's Benefits?

I read on one of the links that if your spouse had passed and when applying to benefits that you could be entitled for part of your spouse benefits included with your benefits. When I asked the question to the analyst that assisted me I was told that I had to chose which one that I wanted to receive. Thank you

Hi,

You're allowed to file for both your own benefits and for survivor benefits simultaneously, but there's generally no good reason to do so. If you qualify for 2 different types of Social Security benefits at the same time, you can only be . . . Read More

When Will WEP Start In My Case?

Hi Larry,
I have what I think is a simple question.
I have 30 years of work and paying into the government pension system in Belgium. I will receive the Belgian pension at age 66, this is set in stone and there is no way to start that earlier for me.
I also have 10 years of paying into US social security and can start collecting that at 62.
I no longer work in either country.
Under the WEP rules, will I receive my full US amount from age 62 to age 66 and THEN face a reduction from WEP when the Belgian pension kicks in OR does the WEP reduction . . . Read More
