Can I Continue Receiving Social Security Disability Benefits Until Age 65?

How, upon turning 62 this year the Supplemental payment of $1137 will cease because that's when FERS considers the 1st year you qualify for Social Security Retirement Benefits. I also have a minor receiving Benefits under my SSDA. My question is: can I continue receiving Social Security Disability Benefits until age of 65 or will Social Security change my Benefits from Disability Retirement to . . . Read More

Why Would My Wife's Benefits Drop So Much?

My wife just turned 62 in Sep. 2019. She has been receiving SSDI since 2003 for $1600 per month. Oct. that same year her benefits went from SSDI to SSI and her monthly Annuity went from $1600 to $1100. - Her full retirement age is 66.5 years. Why would her benefits drop so much? Any help would be welcome. Contacted OPM many of times, but all they say it's because she went on SSI.

Hi,

Just to clarify, SSI is the abbreviation used for Supplemental Security Income, which is a needs based benefit administered by Social Security. I assume what you are . . . Read More

If Both Parents Pass Away Shouldn't The Oldest Child Be Able To File?

If both parents be pass away shoulded the oldest child be able to file. Why the money the parentsmaid go to the family it's not right the government gets it family's could use it for bills left behind by them

Hi,

I assume what you're suggesting is that if both of a person's parents die before collecting their Social Security benefits, their oldest child should be able to collect the Social Security taxes that their parents paid. All I can tell you is that Social Security doesn't work that way. Social Security was passed into law by congress in 1935 . . . Read More

Is This The Best Timing To Maximize My Income?

I am 64 this October. I earn 55000 a year. I have a widow's benefit of 1100 available. My plan is to draw the widows benefit at 66 to avoid the earnings penalty and continue working. Is this the correct timing to maximize my income. Thank you.

Hi,

I'm assuming that your own Social Security retirement benefit rate is higher than your widow's rate, and that the rest of your plan is to switch to your own benefits at age 70. In that case, the strategy you have in mind is probably your best strategy, assuming that your earnings continue to be high enough . . . Read More

Am I Eligible For Survivor Benefits From My Ex-Husband Under The First Wives Rule?

My ex husband and I began to live together in 1963 in Cleveland Ohio, we had two children born while we lived in Cleveland and later had a third child in WV. We later got married in Maryland and divorced 7 years later. I have never remarried but he did and he just died this year and he and his second wife had been separated for nearly 7 years. I am wondering if I am eligible for his benefits under the first wives rule? When I applied for my own SS in 1988, I also applied for half of his retirement and at the time I sent birth certificates, everything SS wanted, They said I was . . . Read More

Can I Switch To A Spousal Benefit When My Wife Starts Drawing Her Own Benefits?

I took my benefit at age 62. My wife took a restricted benefit on my account when she reached 66. She will switch to her benefits with the delayed credits in December 2020, when she turns 70. Can I switch to a spousal benefit at that time?
Thanks.

Hi,

You can't switch to a spousal benefit, but you might be able to qualify for an excess spousal benefit in addition to your own benefit. You'll only qualify for an excess spousal benefit, though, if your wife's primary insurance amount (PIA) is more than twice as much as your PIA. A person's PIA is . . . Read More

What Should I Do?

My name is Alice. I been working since was 14. Now and am 55. Every since this virus been goin on I at risk be cause I have ashma . I am still not workin just getting unemployment now .

Hi,

You can't collect Social Security retirement benefits until you are at least age 62. The only way that you could draw Social Security benefits based on your own work history before age 62 is if you qualify for disability benefits. For more information about Social Security disability benefits, refer to their website: . . . Read More

Would A Social Security Pension Affect My DIC Widow's Pension?

Question #! I receive a DIC widows pension. Would social security pension affect it?

Question #2 I have macular degeneration and I have seen changes in my vision. How do I go about filing for disability? Would it also affect my DIC pension?

Thank you,

Hi,

I wish that I could fully answer your question, but I'm not familiar with the rules governing DIC widow's benefits. Assuming that the benefits you're receiving are paid by the Veteran's Administration, you'll need to check with them to find out if receiving Social Security benefits . . . Read More
