Hi. My son receives SSI for an intellectual disability. He is currently going through a review an we were contacted in May by an office 2 hours away in another state! We were asked to submit docs and told we'd receive a letter on where and how to send it. We never did. So a Google search indicated the fax number and the docs were sent in June. Yesterday I received a letter stating they were never sent- I have a fax receipt confusion that they were. The lady handling this was short with me, rude, and downright condescending when I asked questions about some things I did not understand. How can I get everything transferred to someone else? I'll resend the paperwork, no issue. I simply don't want to deal with a negative person every time we need to report wages or do other things. I also don't want to drive 2 hours when there is a local office 4 miles from my home.
Hi. I don't know what office you're dealing with, but it sounds like a might be a Disability Determinations Service (DDS) office based on your description. Social Security offices don't make the medical determinations for disability benefit entitlement themselves. Those determinations are contracted out to state DDS offices, as are the periodic medical reviews.
I don't know of any way to get your son's case reassigned, although I suppose you might try speaking with a supervisor or office manager at the office where the employee that you dealt with works. I assume that the Social Security office that's nearby your home has the actual jurisdiction of your son's SSI benefits, but you can confirm that by using the SSAs office locater: https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp. Assuming I'm correct about your problem being with a DDS employee, you should be able to submit the requested documents to your nearby Social Security office. They can then forward the documents to the DDS.
Best, Jerry
