How Will The Fact That My Ex-Spouse Took Social Security Disability Benefits Early Affect Me?

Hi Larry, my ex husband has taken a Social security disability retirement from his job as an firefighter. I'm entitled to half of his pension/retirement. How does this affect me now since he's taken a early social security disability at age 57.

Hi. Your ex-spouse's entitlement to Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits won't adversely affect either your potential Social Security divorced spousal or survivor benefits. SSDI benefits aren't reduced for age regardless of at what age a person starts drawing them. Furthermore, if your ex is eligible for an employer pension other than Social Security and if you qualify for any benefits from that plan, it won't have any adverse affect on any type of Social Security benefits for which you may be eligible.

Best, Jerry
