My husband was born in 1955 & is getting SS check for disable - he would like to try to work a few hours - how old does he have to be before they will not take any of his check .? He will be 65 in Sept .& I think then his check turns into his Social security - & someone told us that once that happens he can earn money & it doesn’t affect his check ??
Hi,
If your husband is receiving Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits those benefits won't convert into regular Social Security retirement benefits until the month he reaches full retirement age (FRA), which If he was born in September 1955 would be November 2021 (i.e. 66 & 2 months). Starting with that month he could be paid all of his benefits no matter how much he works and earns.
You husband could potentially do some work while he's still receiving SSDI benefits, but if his earnings exceed the amount that Social Security considers to be substantial gainful activity (SGA) it could cause his SSDI benefits to be suspended or terminated. In 2020, the monthly amount that Social Security considers to be SGA is $1260. For more details about working while drawing SSDI, refer to the following Social Security publication: https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10095.pdf.
Best, Jerry
