In order to meet the requirements for Social Security disability benefits, you must be unable to do substantial gainful work due to your impairment. There are specific guidelines in the Social Security regulations that govern whether or not a person's impairment meets those requirements, but the initial determination on whether or not a person meets those requirements rests with a disability examiner and a doctor who are paid by Social Security (https://www.ssa.gov/disability/professionals/bluebook/index.htm).

The last statistics I saw showed that roughly 2/3rds of all claims for Social Security benefits were disallowed at the initial level of adjudication. However, many of those disallowed claims end up being approved during the appeals process, so you may want to consider filing an appeal. The best chance at getting an unfavorable disability determination reversed is at the Hearings level, where determinations are made by an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ).
