Filing For Benefits

How Do I Apply?

I am a widow and planning on taking my SS at 62 . I would like to take survivor benefit at full retirement age 6710 months. My husband was higher earner and started his at his full retirement age 66 (5 months before he passed) Still makes me cry . Not sure how to apply. I was told by SS they do not take restricted applications anymore. I am worried about losing Survivor Benefit at full retirement age. Also should I wait until Congress /Biden gets there act together. I heard they were going to make changes to Survivors Benefits .Thanks Mary

How Can I Get Benefits On My Husband's Account?

I am currently receiving SS benefits on my own account. I think I would get more if I file on my husbands. How can I change that?

Hi. The only way to get any type of Social Security benefits is to file an application for them. If you're already drawing benefits on your own account, though, you won't be able to apply for other benefits online. So, until Social Security offices reopen, your only option is to apply by phone. You can initiate that process by calling Social Security at 800-772-1213.

How Do I Answer This Application Question?

I am soon to turn 70 and am applying for social security benefits. The application asks if I have worked OR WILL WORK in 2021. Due to Covid I have not worked in 2021. I have not been “fired”, as I am a part time hourly employee and can return when the office reopens. As of now that is not expected to happen before 2022, but that could change. I currently collect unemployment insurance. With this uncertainty, how do I answer the application question? (I have called social security and not gotten a straight answer!)
Thank you.
Nancy

Can My Wife And I File At The Same Time?

I have been collecting spousal benefits under my restricted application since I turned age 66. I am turning 70 this coming November 4 and will be applying for my own benefit to start then. My wife will apply for a spousal benefit to begin then as well. My question is this: can we each apply at the same time for these changes to benefits or should I apply first and wait for for a confirmation of my application before she applies for hers? I intend to do this 4 months before my November 4 birthdate.

Will My Wife's Benefits Be Automatically Adjusted To Include Spousal Benefits?

My wife began collecting her own social security benefits when she reached full retirement age. Now about a year later I turned 62 and have applied for my own benefit (I am the higher earner lower aged spouse). Now that I am collecting she is eligible to collect a spousal benefit equal to 50% of my PIA which is an approx. $500/month increase over her own FRA benefit. Will her benefit be automatically adjusted or is there a process through which she needs to file for the additional spousal benefits? If so how does she do this ( we can find no information on the SSA website).

How Much Time In Advance Should I Contact Social Security To Switch To My Own Benefits?

Hi Larry,
I was born Sept 8,1952 and I am currently collecting spousal social security benefits. When I log into my account online I don't see anywhere that it confirms I am collecting spousal social security. I know I will want to switch over to my own social security when I turn 70 so I can get my maximum benefit. How much time in advance should I contact social security to make the change. Also how can I find out what my benefit will be at 70. I don't see any information about this online. Can you please direct me to where I can find this information. Thank you, Deb
