Have I Been Cheated Out Of Some Of My Benefits?

I was disabled for over 10 years before age 65. My husband was killed in an auto accident in 1991 . So I am an unmarried widow from his death (1991) forward. I will be 70 in July and was now wondering if maybe I might have been cheated out of some of my benefits. I'm collecting on by deceased husbands Social Security account.

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

Could My Case Be Recalculated?

I was layed off at 60, collected unemployment for one year, then collected on my late husband's account for 2 years. I then filed for my own account because I was told benefits would go down for the time I was not working. If benefits are calculated based on 35 years of work history, the nonworking years between 63 and FRA would not have figured in the calculation. I could have continued on my late husband's account until I reached FRA, then gone on my own account. I was misinformed about the benefits calculation.

What's The Difference Between Railroad Benefits And Civil Service?

What is the different between railroad benefits and civil service

Hi,

Well, those are 2 entirely different employers and each has their own retirement benefit programs. Both of the retirement programs are separate from Social Security, but they do interact with Social Security in some cases.

My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, and I'm not an expert on either Railroad Retirement or Civil Service Retirement. Their respective websites are rrb.gov and opm.gov if you're interested in doing your own research.

Best, Jerry

How Can I Get My Deceased Mother's Last Payment Sent To Me As Administrator Of Her Estate?

My mother passed Oct 2 2014. Social security took her last payment to which she was entitled. They want me to fill out a form listing heirs. My mom was mostly estranged from my brothers and did not leave them anything in her will. I am the administrator of her estate. I have provided this info to social security but they still want heir info though my understanding all debts due should be paid to the estate and the estate is responsible for debts of the estate. My mom though deceased has a right to privacy as do my siblings.

How Much Can I Make?

how much can i make will i am geatting ssi pay ment with out paying tax im 80 year old

Hi,

If by SSI you mean Social Security benefits, you could be paid all of your benefits regardless of how much earnings or other income that you have. The amount of income that you could have and not have to pay income tax on your benefits is $25000 for an individual, or $32000 for a married couple filing jointly (https://www.ssa.gov/planners/taxes.html).
