Widow's Benefits

Would My Husband's Disability Benefits Pass On To Me If He Dies When I'm Age 60?

Hi,
Spouse went on SS disability at age 60 and now 53. Should he pass away and I am 60, how would his benefit pass on top me? I believe it may be more than 50% but not sure really if this?

Thanks,
Sherry

Hi Sherry. If you started drawing widow's benefits at age 60, you'd only be paid 71.5% of your husband's full Social Security disability (SSDI) benefit rate. You'd have to be at least full retirement age (FRA) at the time you start drawing widow's benefits to receive a full 100% of your husband's rate.

If My Husband Dies Do I Receive His Amount If They're Higher Than Mine?

Hi Larry, If my husband dies, do I receive his monthly benefits if they are higher than mine. Explain widow's benefits please.

Hi. The answer to your question if basically yes, assuming that you've already reached your full retirement age (FRA) at the time of your husband's death. It gets more complicated if your husband dies before you reach FRA, in which case your widow's rate may or may not be reduced for age depending on whether or not your husband started drawing his Social Security retirement benefits prior to FRA.

Would My Widow Receive The Amount That I Was Receiving When I Die, Or That Amount Plus Subsequent COLAs?

I'm 20 years older than my wife. Let's say I wait until I am 70 to start collecting SS and pass away at 71. When my wife reaches FRA, does she receive the benefits I was receiving when I passed, or does she receive that amount plus COLA for the 15+ years between when I passed and when she applied for my benefits?

When My Husband Passes Away Will I Receive 100% Of His Benefits Even Though I'm 61 1/2?

Hello Larry,

My husband had to retire due to terminal cancer and he took his social security at 63 and has a pension. When he passes away will I receive 100% surviving widow social security even though I am 61 1/2? I work and earn about $18,000 a year.

Thank You,
Suzette

How Much Am I Really Entitled To?

I started taking social security benefits when I was 62. I was born in December 1954 so I hadn't reached FRA. My husband started taking them in 2019. He was 66 that year. He just passed away in February and I filed for spousal benefits. I was told that I wasn't eligible to receive his benefits because they didn't exceed 50% of my benefits which were $837/month. His total benefit was $2007/month. How much am I really entitled to? When did the benefit get capped at 50% of the spouse's benefit?

Should I Now Qualify For Widow's Benefits If I'm Disabled?

I am a 60 year old female who was widowed 32 years ago. My late husband had been a career Officer with USAF and had $300 taken out of his pay monthly as insurance for Survivors Benefit Plan-which I receive. He had told me that I would also get his SS also when I reached 60. As I approached 60 I went to speak with them and was told I could not get it because of something called an ‘offset’ that would not allow me to receive both payments . I was devastated as I had planned for that all this time.
