I already recieve ssdi. I have not worked since i went on ssdi for the last 5 years. But i am not getting enough monthly to cover my basic costs. If my car broke down i would not be able to buy another piece of junk to replace the 30 year old piece of junk i already have. I cant even do repairs to my home. Because of heart and arthritus pain and age (63) i am very limited to what other work i could do. Is there a legal way to get my amount raised?
Hi,
Probably not. Social Security disability (SSDI) benefit rates are calculated on the basis of your earnings history. Assuming that you haven't worked since you for filed for benefits, then you are very likely receiving the correct amount.
SSDI benefits convert to regular retirement benefits at the same rate when the recipient reaches full retirement age. So, unless you could qualify for some other type of benefit it doesn't sound like your benefit rate will increase in the future beyond cost of living increases.
