I am receiving ssdi for over 5 years, 60 years old and would like to try part time work for myself. Can I do that? And if I do, and then file for social security benefits when reaching retirement age, will I receive the same amount?
Hi,
If you haven't worked previously since starting disability benefits, you wouldn't lose your benefits for the first year of work no matter how much you earn. After that, your benefits would be suspended if you earn more than about $1170 per month. And, if you earn enough to cause your disability benefits to stop and end up filing for retirement benefits at your full retirement age, your benefit rate would likely be roughly the same as your disability benefit rate.
For more detailed information on working while receiving disability benefits, refer to the following pamphlet: https://www.ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10095.pdf.
Best, Jerry
