Can I Now Pay Social Security And Medicare Taxes For Past Years?

I am USA citizen 66 years old. I am working abroad and payed my federal tax for more than 10 year without paying SS and health care tax. Can I pay the missed tax for this period

Regards

Hi. No. You cannot voluntarily pay Social Security taxes to become insured for benefits or increase your benefit rate. If you have wages that are subject to Social Security taxes, your employer is responsible for withholding and paying the required Social Security taxes. If you have net earnings from self-employment in the U.S., you would pay the required Social . . . Read More

If I stop ssi would I get more from I'm husbands

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. The answer to your question is no. Stopping your Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments would not allow you to get a higher Social Security widow's benefit. Social Security widow's benefits are calculated based on the deceased worker's earnings history, so whether or . . . Read More

Can I Apply For Survivor Benefits Until I Reach Age 70?

I am 66 and 3 months old. I am currently working and making about 42,000. My husband died in 2002 when he was 62. I received a death benefit at that time and monthly benefits for my 2 children who were in high school at that time.
I plan to continue working till I am 70. Is it possible for me to apply for survivors benefits until I reach age 70? Can I still earn my annual salary or will I do better earning less? My husbands benefits were not that good as he had major health issues for some time.

Hi. Yes, and it sounds like you probably should. If you . . . Read More

If I Remarry Will I Lose My Widow's Benefits?

I've been disabled since 2003 and I turned 50 in 2020. I draw widow's benefits from my deceased husband. If I remarry will I loose my widow's benefits. I draw my social security disability and my widow's benefits and I just started receiving my widow's benefits October of 2021

Hi. No. If you're already at least age 50 and drawing disabled widow's benefits (DWB) then your DWB benefits won't stop if you remarry (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0406.html . . . Read More

Can You Provide A Name Of Someone Who Could Help Me With My Medicare Premium Issue?

Hi Mr. K,

Thanks to you and your great book (gave me a very solid base of knowledge) and a little help from one of your associates who called social security for me with me on the line (best few hundred I've ever spent, by the way--can't remember his name or his firm's name), I was able to figure out what the best course of action was for me to do after my lovely spouse passed--and I just want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Social security is such a confusing thing, even for the very well educated. CRAZY that we put up with this in this country since we all . . . Read More

If I Currently Receive Child In Care Survivor Benefits Can I Switch To A Widows Benefit At My Full Retirement Age?

Hi. I. Was wondering if I am currently receiving survivor benefits based on caring for DAC (75%), am I able to change my benefit to a widow benefit when I reach full retirement age of 67 and get the 100% survivor benefit. Thank you so much.

Hi. Yes, but depending on the family maximum benefit (FMB) limit on your deceased spouse's account you might not be able to be paid the full 100% rate.

Your optimal claiming strategy depends on a number of different factors, such as whether or not you are insured for benefits based on your own earnings history, . . . Read More

Should I Apply For Survivor Benefits Or Would It Be A Waste Of Time?

Me and my partner wasn’t married we lived together for 30 yrs had a child together. I had my name changed to his last name and still go by it. He was drawing his Social Security full amount due to a accident in 2005 he passed away in 2016. Should I apply for benefits or is a waste of time I’ve been told different things

Hi. Simply living together for a long time and having a child together wouldn't make you eligible for survivor benefits. To potentially qualify for survivor benefits you and the deceased must have either been married, or your relationship . . . Read More

Will I Still Be Able To File A Spousal Claim With SS If My Husband Dies?

My husband started drawing RRB (Tier I & Tier II) at age 64, and is intending to file for his delayed Social Security benefit at age 70 in a few years. The increase will be quite substantial. I am drawing Social Security benefits on my own account, however, the RRB pays them to me (sent to them from SS) because as a spouse of a former railroad worker, I am entitled to receiving 1/2 of his Tier II benefits also. So, the RRB is in charge of disbursing my monthly funds. If my husband would die unexpectedly before he turns age 70 and has not filed for his delayed benefit, will . . . Read More

Is It True That I Must Accept Reduced Widow's Benefits?

Hi Larry, My husband passed away recently at 74 and since we were 10 years apart and he was the major earner we always planned on me able to wait until my FRA in order to collect his full (he waited until he was 70 to file) benefit. When I turned 62, I filed to collect my benefit. When I informed SS that I was thinking about waiting until my FRA (i was born in 1957) instead of taking reduced widow's benefit, they told me because I collected a spousal benefit when I started taking my SS (which they automatically gave to me!) I am not eligible to wait until FRA and must take my . . . Read More
