Can I Collect Social Security Spousal Benefits If I'm Receiving Railroad Retirement?

I am currently collecting RR benefits and reached FRA prior to my retirement . My wife retired at 62 and has also been collecting RR retirement but at a reduction.. Her plan is to switch to Social Security at 70 since her benefit will be much higher. My question is can I collect a spousal benefit at that time based on her SS benefit? BTW I purchased your book Get What's Yours prior to my retirement and though I receive RR your book answered many questions regarding retirement for myself and my wife. Thank you!

I’m worried about what I should do before it happens because I cannot afford to lose my disability! Thank you for your time!

Is It True That I'd Have To Be Re-evaluated for SSDI If I Apply For Widow's Benefits?

Hi. I am currently on Social Security Disability for the past 4 years. I’m 59 yeats old. My Spouse just died this October. I called Social Security and then had to be called back weeks later. I asked the girl since I’m on Social Security Disability already can I apply for Widower Benefits. She said I would have to be reevaluated again for SSDI. She said why don’t you just wait until you turn 60 then you can get it automatically. Is this true?

What Can We Do To Prove That My Mother And Father Were Married?

My father died and my mother needs a marriage license to get his benefits but she cannot find it. They were married 69 years, the marriage was in India. We live in Arizona. What can we do to prove they were married for social security purposes?

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Primary proof of marriage is a marriage certificate, but when primary proof isn't available and can't be obtained then Social Security can accept secondary proof. I don't know what type of secondary proof may be available in your mother's case, but items that can potentially be used for . . . Read More

Do You Have Any Update Regarding The Wage Index Issue For People Born In 1960?

Is there any update you can give re the wage price index issue for people born in 1960?

Hi. Yes, I do, and I'm glad you asked about this. To clarify for other readers what you're referring to, Social Security retirement benefits are calculated based on an average of a person's highest 35 years of Social Security covered wage-indexed earnings. The indexing is based on the national Average Wage Index (AWI) amount in the year that a person reaches age 60. Typically, AWI amounts increase each year, resulting in higher indexed earnings and higher resulting . . . Read More

Hi. Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments will continue to be paid on the 1st day of each month. So, if you receive SSI payments your payment date will not change.

What Happens When Calculating My Retirement?

Good afternoon,
I am a teacher for Miami-Dade County Public schools. I am in a pension program where I contribute 3% and my county employer contributes 3%. I was inquiring about my future Social Security retirement amount. I was reading about the Windfall Elimination Provision and wondered how that will impact my retirement. According to the school district's website, 6.2% of my salary is taxed for Social Security. So when calculating my retirement, what happens? On MySSA, it says that I will receive approximately $2,805. I appreciate your help!
Thank you for your . . . Read More

Which Payment Date Prevails If A Person Is Drawing Their Own Benefits And Later Gets Excess Spousal Benefits?

Re: Payment dates
I know that Social Security payment dates are based on date of birth. However I have never seen a direct answer to how the date is determined if you are getting benefits based on two different work histories. If a person receives benefits based upon their work history and then later gets excess spousal benefits which payment day would prevail? theirs or the spouses?

Hi. A person's own benefit is always primary, so if a person is dually entitled to their own benefits and a partial auxiliary (e.g. spousal) or survivor benefit then the . . . Read More

If I Marry Someone With A Minor Child Can I Receive More Money?

If I marrying wife and she has a minor child can I receive more money and which account does it goes in hers or mines and if hers can it be move.

Hi. Your benefit amount wouldn't change if you get married to someone with a minor child. However, children can potentially qualify for a child's benefit on the record of a step-parent who's drawing Social Security retirement or disability benefits. In order to qualify for benefits the stepchild must meet a dependency requirement, meaning that you would have to be providing at least one-half of your stepchild's . . . Read More
