Can I Get Spousal Support?

Am on social security disability am 61 and now my husband retired when can I get spoiler support. Or my money.

Hi. By "support" I assume you're referring to spousal benefits. If your husband is collecting either Social Security disability (SSDI) or retirement benefits and unless you have a child in your care who's eligible for benefits on your husband's account, the earliest that you could potentially qualify for spousal benefits is at age 62. However, you'll only qualify for spousal benefits if your husband's primary insurance amount (PIA) is more than . . . Read More

When Can I Start Working And Keep My Social Security?

I am 65 retired when can I start working and keep my Social Security with our losing any money from my Social Security check.

Hi. Depending on how much you earn, you might be able to work and collect benefits now. In 2021, people under full retirement age (FRA) can earn up to $18,960 without losing any benefits but they lose $1 of benefits for each $2 that they earn in excess of that amount. The exempt amount is higher (i.e. $50,520) for people who will reach FRA prior to the end of the year ( . . . Read More

How Much Would My Children's Auxiliary Benefits Be?

I have three children. My benefit amount is $1886. What would their auxiliary payments be for? Two of them receive SSI and one receives a Title Iv D adoption assistance payment of 795 for when I adopted him. My mother has custody and is retired and draws her retirement. She also is a 1099 contractor and has a job. Will this affect what they can earn? My step dad also works. I tried to calculate it myself but this is so confusing. Also my eligible onset date is August 2019.

Hi. I assume you mean that your children are either under age 18, or disabled from an . . . Read More

What Is Our Best Strategy?

My wife is almost 64 and 4 years older than me with an FRA of 66.5. My FRA is 67. I was going to wait until 70 to file. What is our best strategy? I’m the main earner. Thank you!

Hi. One possibility would be for your wife to apply for her benefits at full retirement age (FRA), and for you to file for your benefits at age 70. Whether or not that's a good plan, however, depends on your and your wife's comparative benefit rates.

By waiting until age 70 to claim your benefits you would be providing your wife with the highest possible survivor rate if . . . Read More

Do I Qualify For Benefits On My Deceased Ex-Spouse's Record?

My ex husband died a few months ago. We were married for fifteen years. He was deported and never collected his social, security. I did briefly remarry for three years. Do I qualify for spousal benefits?

Hi. If you're unmarried now or if your current marriage occurred after you reached age 60, then it sounds like you could potentially qualify for survivor benefits as early as age 60, or 50 if you're disabled. Your ex's deportation wouldn't affect your potential eligibility, assuming he was insured for Social Security benefits.

There isn't enough . . . Read More

Is It True That I Can't Get My Deceased Husband's Benefits Until Age 70?

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. You don't need to be age 70 to be paid widow's benefits. Widow's benefits can be paid as early as age 60, or at age 50 if the widow is disabled. You don't mention your present age, so I don't know what options you may have. You may want to strongly consider using our software ( . . . Read More
