Can I Have My SSDI Transferred To Regular SS At Age 62?

Can I have my SSDI transferred to regular SS at age 62 even though my retirement age is 67 and will it be the same as i get now because i did work two years part time on the tkt to work program but now can no longer do it
Than you

Hi. You could switch from collecting Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits to Social Security retirement benefits at age 62, but that would likely just reduce your monthly benefit rate roughly 30%. SSDI benefits are calculated at 100% of a person's primary insurance amount (PIA), which is the amount that a person . . . Read More

Why Didn't My Family Member Get A Benefit Payment For May?

A family member on SSDi received a letter stating his benefit would arrive on a specific date each on the instead of the fourth Wednesday. They had not received the May benefit in June, but received the June benefit on July 3. This due to coverage of a underage dependent starting.
So where is the benefit for May? He received nothing in June. That is difficult for a person on limited income.

Hi. I have no idea. The only people who are paid their Social Security benefits on the 3rd day of each month are people who either receive Supplemental Security . . . Read More

What Will I Receive When I Start Receiving Social Security Retirement Benefits?

I am disabled and I am now 61. I must now file for retirement, I do have just 40 credits. I now make $794. MONTH WHAT WILL. I make now. Possibly?

Hi. The amount of your Social Security retirement benefit would be calculated based on an average of your 35 highest years of Social Security covered wage indexed earnings. Without knowing that amount, I can't give you an estimate of your benefit rate.

I can tell you that if the $794 that you're currently receiving is Supplemental Security Income (SSI), your SSI payments will be offset dollar for dollar by . . . Read More

Why Am I Not Receiving My Husband's Full Rate?

My spouse was awarded SSDI after he was deceased. He had already retired, but then applied for SSDI. About 1 year later I became disabled and now receive SSDI based off of my record. I applied for disabled widow benefit, yet do not receive an amount that would equal the higher of the two (mine is 1661 and he made 2570. I receive 600 from his). Why would this be?
Also, will benefits be forever reduced?

Also, I am not planning to be on SSDI forever (who does)? If and when I am able to return, will I be penalized later in life for having taken widow benefits while on . . . Read More

How Much Will My Wife's Benefit Rate Decrease Because Of Her Pension?

I am close to retirement. My wive works for a college where she will get a pension. She has been there 10 years.

I expect to retire at 65.

My wive earned enough credits in disuse security to get benefits.

How much will her be fit decrease due to the pension.

Hi. Assuming that your wife's pension is based on earnings that were exempt from Social Security taxes, it sounds like receiving her pension will cause her Social Security retirement benefit rate to be lowered due to the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP). The WEP formula is . . . Read More

Is It Correct That I Can Claim My Husband's Benefits If I Make $6,000?

I retired from the Postal Service in 2010 under CSR. My husband is deceased but was receiving Social Security, we were married 25 years. I am working to qualify for my social security, and was told I only needed to make $6,000. before I can qualify. After I qualify I want to claim my husband’s benefits.

Hi. You wouldn't need additional earnings to potentially be eligible for widow's benefits. People can qualify for widow's benefits even if they've never worked. However, it sounds like any widow's benefits you qualify for would be offset by 2/3rds of the . . . Read More

Is It Possible To Take My Social Security At Age 62 And Then Take My Husband's SS At Age 65?

I am widowed and will be 62 in September. I plan to take my social security in September and then take my husbands at 65. Is this possible?

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. The answer to your question is yes, but I don't have enough information to be able to tell you whether or not your plan is a good one. Depending on your relative benefit rates and whether or not you'll be working, your best filing strategy is almost certainly one of the following:
1) File for reduced widow's benefits at now or as soon as your earnings will permit at least some . . . Read More
