If I want to move back to Germany do I get the same Benefits .for my Daughter and me after my Husband passed

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like you might qualify for survivor benefits now if your husband was insured for Social Security benefits and if either a) you're disabled, or b) your daughter is under age 16 or disabled and she's eligible for child benefits on your husband's account. At age 60, you could potentially qualify for widow' . . . Read More

Will I Receive My Payments For Both July And August In August?

I retired on May 1,2021. I received May and June social security payment on July 2,2021. Will I receive both July and August, in August ?. Then once a month after that?

Hi. No. Social Security benefits are paid a month behind, so the payment you receive in August will be your benefit payment for July. Your benefit payment for August won't be paid until September, and so on.

Best, Jerry

Can I Collect Social Security From My First Husband Who Is Now Deceased?

I was married to my first husband 4/10 years before we divorce. I remarried and divorce my second husband. Can I collect Social Security from my first husband who is now deceased.

Hi. Yes, at least potentially. A subsequent marriage wouldn't bar you from qualifying for survivor benefits on the record of your previous spouse as long as the subsequent marriage has ended in death or divorce. To actually qualify for benefits on your first husband's record, though, In addition to having been married to him for at least 10 years you'd also need to be at least . . . Read More

Am I Entitled To An Increase Because I Worked After I Started Getting SSDI?

I have been on SSDI for a while. During that time, I did work. I am not able to work anymore. Am I entitled to an increase since I worked some of time while being on SSDI?

Hi. The answer to your question depends on how much you earned per year after starting your benefits, and how those earnings compare to your earnings in the years prior to when you started collecting benefits on which your initial benefit rate was based.

Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits are based on a variable number of years of a person's Social Security covered wage- . . . Read More

Will Social Security Require Us To File Form SSA-3368 When Our Daughter Files For Disabled Adult Child's Benefits?

I have a 31year old adult disabled daughter receiving both SSI an SSDI (on her own work record). Her father will be filing for Social Security Retirement Benefits soon. When her father files for SS Retirement Benefits we can also file an application for (Child's Insurance Benefits) based on his work record. As a result she is entitled to benefits on more then one earnings record (her own and her fathers). I also know she would not collect the maximum amount on both earnings records. She would collect the higher of the two and she would also not collect SSI anymore. My question . . . Read More

Shouldn't I Be Getting My Own Social Security Now?

I was born in Switzerland in 54, worked there 5 years and immigrated to the US. Got married in 81, disabled from MVA in 2009. Didn’t know about disability insurance till 2012, went to the Social Security office. They said my husband was 62 years old, could get early SS and I could get SSI. They didn’t explain anything about quarters from work earned. They paid me $330/mos, I was most of the time unable to walk and my husband cared for me 24/7. Shouldn’t I be getting my own Social Security by now? I read up on it lately and I have 55 quarters in the US and I have worked in . . . Read More

Can I Switch From My Own Benefits To Drawing On My Husband's Social Security?

Hi Larry
I have been receiving my social security since I turned 66. I was born 10/53. Can I switch and start receiving benefits on my husband's social security. His is a larger monthly amount than mine.

Hi. No, you can't start drawing own benefits first and later switch to drawing spousal benefits. You could, however, apply for an excess spousal benefit on your husband's record. If you qualify, the excess spousal amount would then be paid in addition to your own benefit rate.

Assuming that your husband is still living, if you apply for an . . . Read More

What Percentage Of Survivor Benefits Would I Receive If I Start Drawing At Age 65?

My ex passed I plan on retiring at age 65 instead of 66 1/2 what percentage of survivors benefit would I receive?

Hi. The exact percentage reduction for starting surviving divorced spousal benefits early varies depending on your year of birth. If your full retirement age (FRA) is 66 1/2 and if you start drawing those benefits 18 months early, the applicable reduction would amount to roughly 7%. Or, in other words, your benefit rate would likely amount to roughly 93% of your unreduced rate.

It sounds like your best strategy for claiming benefits . . . Read More

Is There Anything I Can Do If I Wish I Wouldn't Have Started My Benefits At Age 62?

In March 2005 I was a victim of a hit and run auto accident Later had súbditas hematoma surgery My insurance agent told me I had to take social security at 62. I did but now wished I’d waited until 66. She was an Aetna rep and denies she did this. I’m now 75. Thank you

Hi. If the Social Security benefit you started drawing at age 62 was Social Security disability (SSDI), then it was probably good advice to start your benefits as soon as possible. SSDI benefits aren't reduced for age so there's generally no downside for starting those benefits early. . . . Read More
