Can I File For Half Of My Ex's Benefits?

I've been divorced for 20 years and not remarried.
I am 62 and started pulling Social Security this year 2021.

My ex is older and has NOT started pulling SS yet.

My questions are:

1.) Can I file for half her benefits of what she would get?

2.) Can one switch between one's own benefit and divorced person's benefits?

Thank you, Steve

Hi Steve, You can file for divorced spousal benefits now since your ex is at least age 62 and you've been divorced for over 2 years, but as long as she's living you could only be eligible . . . Read More

I Need A Sample Letter To Appeal My Benefits Being Cut.

Need a sample letter to appeal cutting my benefits

Hi. I'm sorry, but I don't know of any sample appeal letters. There are a multitude of different reasons why people file appeals, so it would likely be impossible to find a sample that would address your specific problem.

If your benefit payments have been reduced, there could be any number of reasons for that. Hopefully, you've received a letter from Social Security explaining why they reduced your benefit rate. If not, you should probably call Social Security for a verbal explanation. if you . . . Read More

How Much Would My Payment Be If I Switch From Disability To Social Security At Age 62?

I'm currently on permanent disability and I'm 61 yrs old getting ready to turn 62 in a few months I now receive 1489.00 per month what would be my payment if I switch over to social security payment. Would I benefit from switching.

Hi. I assume you mean that you're receiving Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits. SSDI benefits are paid at 100% of a person's primary insurance amount (PIA), which is equal to the Social Security retirement benefit rate they'd receive if they start drawing at full retirement age (FRA). In other words, drawing SSDI is . . . Read More

Is It Possible That Social Security Isn't Including COLAs In My Own Benefit Calculation Because I Already Received COLAs As A Spouse?

My full retirement age (July 2017) I filed a Restricted Application for Spousal Benefits (which I was eligible) and received 50% of my husband's benefit for 4 years. I will be 70 this month (July 2021) and I was informed by Social Security my new benefit calculation result includes the 4 years of Delayed Retirement Credits (8% yearly). However, I determined this calculation did not include any Cost Of Living Adjustments (COLA) for those SAME 4 years. Question: Is it possible Social Security is NOT including those 4 years of COLA since I was receiving 50% of my husband's . . . Read More

If My Wife Files For Her Benefits Now At Age 63 Will Her Future Spousal Benefits Be Reduced?

My wife is 63. I am 60. If she starts collecting social security now, will her spousal benefits be reduced if I wait until I am 67 (full-retirement benefits) to start drawing social security? Or will her spousal benefit automatically increase to 50% of my full benefit?

Hi. If your wife starts drawing her benefits prior to full retirement age (FRA), she'll retain the resulting reduction for age even if she later becomes eligible for a spousal benefit.

For example, say Mary files for her Social Security retirement benefits at age 63. Mary's PIA is $ . . . Read More

When I Reach Age 62 Can I Collect Part Of My Ex-Spouse's Social Security?

I was married for 10 years to someone in the Army.
Once he retired from the Army I was able to collect a part of his military retirement.I am also on Social Security disability.Im now 60 years old. When I make 62, is it true I can collect a part of his social security?

Hi. I assume you mean that your ex-husband is still living. In that case you could potentially qualify for divorced spousal benefits on your ex's account as early as age 62, but your divorced spousal rate would be reduced for age if you start drawing prior to your full retirement age ( . . . Can I File An Amended Return For 2020 And Later File An Amended Return For 2019?

Can I file an amend return for 2020 first and after a while file an amend for 2019?

Hi. My expertise doesn't extend to income taxes, but I believe that you can file an amended tax return for any year that ended within 3 years 3 months and 15 days of when you file the amended return. You should definitely confirm that with the IRS, though.

If My Wife Takes Her Benefits At Age 63 Or 64, Would She Still Get My Full Amount If I Die?

If my wife takes her social security at 63 or 64 her FRA is 66.8 and i take mine at FRA is 66.6 she is 63 and i'm 64 would she still get my full amount if i die or still get 50% of mine.

Hi. Your wife could still get your full benefit amount as a widow even if she starts drawing her own benefits early, as long as she doesn't start drawing the widow's benefit prior to her full retirement age (FRA). She couldn't collect both her own benefits and your full benefit rate at the same time, though, just the higher of the two amounts.

By the way, when I . . . Read More

Will My Daughter's Benefit Amount Go Up When My Benefits Stop?

Hello. My husband passed away in 2019. We have 3 children, where 2 of them were eligible for social security benefits. My husband had cancer and was also on disability social security. When we began getting social security, we all received $1,463 I believe ,including myself for widows survivors benefit. Then our second son turned 18. They increased mine and my daughters check to $1,690 each. I am about to lose mine as our youngest daughter is turning 16 years old. My question is, will my daughters social security increase? And if so, would you have any idea as to what it would . . . Read More

Hi. Spouses can potentially be eligible for benefits on the record of a worker who's receiving Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits, but only if they are at least age 62 or if they have a child in their care who is eligible for benefits on the disabled worker's record and who is either under age 16 or is disabled.
