Can I Receive Spousal Benefits Even If I Collect A State Pension?

I am 67 and collect a state pension. I did not earn enough quarters to qualify for social security benefits. My wife is 72 and has been receiving SSA benefits for seven years. Can I receive spousal benefits on her record even though I collect a state pension?
I tried applying twice and both times SSA stated I did not earn enough credits to qualify. But I am applying for spousal benefits so its confusing.

Hi. You can apply for and potentially qualify for spousal benefits if your wife is collecting Social Security retirement benefits, but assuming that . . . Read More

When Can I Get My Own Benefits, And Would I Still Get My Deceased Husband's Benefits?

When I turn 60 my husband passed away in 2016 and social security told me I had to wait until I turned 60 to get his social security when then can I get mine and would I still get his

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Assuming that you aren't disabled, the earliest that you could qualify for widow's benefits is age 60, and the earliest that you could qualify for your own benefits is at age 62. You can't draw more than one full benefit simultaneously, though, so if you apply for both your own benefits and for widow's benefits you can only be paid the higher of . . . Read More

How Can I Get Benefits On My Husband's Account?

I am currently receiving SS benefits on my own account. I think I would get more if I file on my husbands. How can I change that?

Hi. The only way to get any type of Social Security benefits is to file an application for them. If you're already drawing benefits on your own account, though, you won't be able to apply for other benefits online. So, until Social Security offices reopen, your only option is to apply by phone. You can initiate that process by calling Social Security at 800-772-1213.

Just an FYI, you can't stop collecting benefits on . . . Read More

Should My Sister File For Survivor Benefits Even If She's Working?

I have done some reading, and used online calculators.
(Writing for sister, working, divorced, recently widowed with disabled adult son (disabled long before age 22). Former spouse died in 2020. I know she MUST file for a restricted benefit.

The calculators advise to file for mother benefit, child benefit and survivor benefit now and her social security at 70. Then the calculators show zero for the mother benefit? There is also an earnings test and she will lose much of the survivor benefit (looks like 11,000 a year).

I have read: "It is important to note . . . Read More

What Will Change When I Turn 62 If I Receive Social Security Disability Benefits?

I like to know what my social security change right now I'm receiving social security disability and I will be 62 next year and I want to know is it going to change

Hi. Nothing will change when you turn 62. When you reach your full retirement age (FRA) of 67 your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits will automatically convert to regular Social Security retirement benefits, but your benefit rate won't change when that happens.

Best, Jerry

Will My Son's Benefit Rate Increase When His Half Brother Gets Too Old To Collect Benefits?

My son's mother passed away in 2012. She was unmarried at the time of her death. My son and his half brother both both receive survivor benefits in the amount of $726.00. My son's half brother will turn 18 and graduate from high school shortly after his birthday in early 2022. Will my son's benefit amount increase at that time? Her survivor benefits are not going to any other spouse or child, just split between my son and his half brother. Thanks in advance.

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Unfortunately I can't answer your question without information such as your age, how long you were married, and whether or not you're already drawing benefits. The requirements for widow's benefits are outlined in the following section of Social Security's handbook: https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0401.html. . . . Read More

Can You Shed Any Light On How My LTD Insurance Was Handled?

HELLO Larry , I had been collecting SSDI benefits for 5 years .. Here is a complex question When I first became disabled , I had a long term disability policy thru my employer , that paid me roughly 60 percent of my salary about 4000 monthly thru a Prudential policy , However , once I was awarded SSDI about 2000 monthly the Prudential , pro rated their payment to 2000 , So I wasn't getting anything more than the 4000.0 And once I reached FRA the Prudential ceased their payment . SSDI was automatically changed to SS . So , since the Prudential ,pro rated their original . . . Read More

Will My Child's Money Be Added To My Account When She Turns 18?

When my child turns 18, will her money be added to my account?

Hi. I assume you mean that your daughter is receiving child benefits on your account and your asking if your benefit rate will increase when she's no longer eligible for benefits. In that case, the answer's no. Child benefits paid on the account of a living parent are auxiliary (i.e. extra) benefits. Child benefits are paid in addition to the worker's benefits, not deducted from them. And, since payment of auxiliary benefits don't cause the worker's benefit rate to be reduced, the worker's . . . How Can My Friend Reduce Her Assets In Order To Qualify For Benefits?

My friend, age 57, has just been certified by the state as eligible for social security disability. I believe her total wealth is about $30,000. She has been advised she must divest some of that money because she has “too much” to receive assistance. She has been told she cannot just give it away. She has been unable to get an appointment with anyone to discuss this with.
What expenditures can she make that are legal use of some of her funds but still benefit her directly? For example, could she apply the cost of eye glasses? Can she prepay rent for a year?
Can she . . . Read More
