Why Can't We Deduct SS Payroll Deductions From Our Yearly Income Taxes?
1) I am trying to understand why we can't deduct SS payroll deductions from our yearly income taxes. Or at least our half of the 15.3%. Since this is clearly a "tax" and even stated as such on the SS website! It should be deductible! Otherwise they are double taxing me! Paying income tax on my SS tax each and every year.
2) And therefore, shouldn't it also be subtracted from your annual income estimate when calculating your withholding amounts?
3) Is the 85% of your SS benefits being subject to taxation (based on additional income), because they recognize this as a . . . Read More

Are Survivor Benefits Calculated At The Time You Apply For Them Or When You Start Collecting Them?
Hello. Are SS survivor's benefits calculated at the time (month) you apply for them or when you start collecting benefits? Thanks for your help.
Hi. I'm not sure exactly what you mean. The dates that a person applies for and starts collecting benefits doesn't really affect the basic calculation of their survivor rate. It could, however, cause a surviving spouse or ex-spouse to receive a reduced benefit rate if they start drawing prior to their full retirement age (FRA).
For example, unreduced widow's benefits are typically calculated based on 100 . . . Read More

Will The Benefit I Get From Brazil Negatively Impact The Amount I'll Receive From Social Security?
I am a US citizen born in Brazil and living in the US for the past 27 years. Three years ago, when I turned 65, having accumulated enough credits during my prior working life in Brazil (before becoming a US taxpayer), I applied for “old-age” retirement benefits in that country, which pays the national minimum wage (approximately US$ 2,600 a year, at the current exchange rate). In a couple of years, I will turn 70 and will apply for SS benefits in the US. I would like to know if the retirement benefit I am currently receiving in Brazil will negatively impact the amount I will . . . Read More

Why Can't I Draw Something From My Deceased Husband's SS?
I know I made more than my husband and he retired at 62, but he passed away 14 yeasrd ago. I collect my own SS but why can't I draw something from his SS. It's definitely unfair
Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. The only real answer I can give you is that it sounds like you don't qualify for widow's benefits because of what is written in the Social Security law. The law states that if a person applies for both their own Social Security benefits and for widow(er) benefits, they can only be paid the higher of the two benefit rates, not both ( . . . Read More

If I Receive Divorced Spousal Benefits Will Social Security Know When My Ex-Spouse Dies And Increase My Benefit Amount?
I recieve a spousal benifit from my ex spouse will ssa know when he passes and increase my benifit?
Hi. The answer is almost certainly yes. Social Security receives notices of death from many different sources, such as reports from relatives, notices from funeral homes, and computer interfaces with the death registries maintained by the various states. Once Social Security receives such a notice, they terminate the deceased worker's benefit payments and automatically convert any auxiliary (e.g. spousal, divorced spousal, child) benefits being paid on the . . . Would My Disability Be Taken Away If I Sell My Home?
I’m on disability and I was just wondering if my disability would be taken away if I sold my home? It is just to much for me to take care of anymore and was considering selling it but I can’t afford to have my disability taken away.
Hi. The answer to your question depends on what type of benefits you receive. If you're receiving any type of Social Security benefits, including disability benefits, then selling your home would have absolutely no effect at all on your benefits. But, if you're receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), then selling your . . . Read More

Will Social Security Take Back The Payment My Sister-In-Law Received Shortly After Her Death?
My sister-in-law passed away on June 30th at the age of 68. She usually received her Social Security check on the third day of the month via direct deposit because she had been on SSDI for many years. Will Social Security take back her July 3 benefit check, or is she entitled to it? If entitled to the check, what does her husband need to do with Social Security? Thanks for any information you can provide.
Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. Unfortunately, yes, Social Security will request return of your sister-in-law's July 3rd payment as soon as they are made . . . Read More
