Will I Be Able To Collect On My Ex-Husband's Account When He Starts Drawing His Benefits At Age 70?

I was born May 22, 1952& he was born June 15, 1953.We were married in 1977& divorced in 1998. By the time we divorced, I was disabled&receiving disability benefits from social security under my work record. Those benefits became retirement benefits when I reached "retirement age." At that time, my wor k record didn't reach the threshold for me to draw benefits off his record. He plans to let his social security benefits grow until he reaches the age when he's required to collect. I believe that age is 70.When he turns 70 (2023),will I be able to collect because his . . . If I Take My Benefits Now But Keep Working Will I Automatically Get A Rate Increase?

Hi Larry,

I received my letter BNC#21B2493B85006-T about taking benefits at full retirement age 66 and 2 months.

My question is this:

If I take my benefits now BUT keep working and contributing will I automatically get a rate increase in the next year? Or is it locked in?

I am a bit confused. Thank you,

Hi. Yes, you can potentially increase your Social Security retirement benefit rate if you continue working after you claim benefits, but your benefit rate will only increase if your subsequent annual earnings are higher than one . . . Read More

Can I Draw On My First Husband And How Much Would I Get?

Divorced twice can I draw on first husband and do I have to wait 2 years after Divorce from second husband to draw I will be 62 in February if first husband gets 1600 A month I would 600 how much would I get

Hi. Here's the rule - in order to qualify for divorced spousal benefits, your ex must either be at least age 62 or drawing his benefits, and if he's not drawing benefits then you must have been divorced from that ex for at least 2 years. You also must have been married to your ex for at least 10 years, and you must currently be unmarried. You wouldn't . . . Read More

Will My Social Security Check Be Increased When I Turn 62?

I turn 62 next month or June. Will my Social Security check.be increased.

Hi. I assume you mean that you're already drawing either Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits or auxiliary or survivor benefits. If so, the amount of your benefit won't change simply because you're turning age 62. You may have other filing options available to you upon reaching age 62, though, but I can't give you any advice because there isn't enough information in your question.

Best, Jerry

How Do I Get My Mom's SS Benefit Redeposited In Her Bank Account?

I am looking to have my mom's ss benefit redeposited back into her bank account after reporting her death which caused an overdraft i am on the account and now am responsible.

Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. If your mother was entitled to the benefit payment that was deducted from her account, it would be an underpayment that could be redistributed to eligible family members or her estate. In order to claim a Social Security underpayment you must complete a form SSA-1724. The form and an explanation of who can qualify to be paid an underpayment can be found . . . Read More

Shouldn't My And My Son's Benefit Rates Be Higher?

I just purchased your software and ran some reports. In the reports, it appears that the maximum family benefits did not come out as I calculated (using the SSA formula for 2021). Specifically, my wife's PIA is $2,045. At 62, she is now applying for her retirement benefits. According to your report, I (now at 62) could apply for the child-in-care spousal benefits and my daughter, who has been disabled since birth (now at 24), could receive the disability benefits per my wife's earnings record. Your software shows that in such scenario, my wife will receive her reduced benefits . . . Read More

Is It Correct That At FRA I Can Claim 50% Of My Former Husband's PIA Instead Of My SSDI?

My husband and I were married for 21 years and I was primarily a housewife.
I have subsequently worked enough to qualify for Social Security benefits and I am now on SSD. I am 62 years old and my former husband is 65 years old. Am I correct in understanding that when I reach full retirement age I can elect to draw 50% of his PIA instead of my SSD?

Hi. Your understanding is basically correct, but you wouldn't stop getting your own benefits if you file for divorced spousal benefits. Instead, your unreduced divorced spousal benefit would be calculated . . . Read More

Should My Wife Get A Job So That She Can Draw On Her Own Account?

According to her account report from SSI, my wife is one credit short (39 out of 40) to be able to draw social security on her own account. (She has been a homemaker most of her life, so has not reported any taxable income for many years). The questions are these:
1) Should she get a job so that she can earn the required taxable income (+/- $1500) so that she can draw on her own account? Or can she draw on my account as my spouse?
2) If she draws on my account, should she wait until I start drawing in October of this year (when I will meet my 66 years and two months . . . Read More

Would My Widow Receive The Amount That I Was Receiving When I Die, Or That Amount Plus Subsequent COLAs?

I'm 20 years older than my wife. Let's say I wait until I am 70 to start collecting SS and pass away at 71. When my wife reaches FRA, does she receive the benefits I was receiving when I passed, or does she receive that amount plus COLA for the 15+ years between when I passed and when she applied for my benefits?

Hi. If your wife waits until her full retirement age (FRA) to claim widow's benefits she would receive your full benefit rate inclusive of the delayed retirement credits (DRC) you earned by waiting until age 70 to start drawing, plus any Social . . . Read More
