Is What The Social Security Representative Told Me About The Amount Of My Son's Benefit Correct?
Question on this, I'm applying for my Social security now at 62, my son is disable and I have talked to several people at the office and at the 800 number and they tell me it is based off when I apply for my social security which will be age 62 and not my full 66/10. His this correct/ thanks
Hi. No, it sounds like you were either misinformed or there was some type of misunderstanding. The benefit rate for a disabled adult child (DAC) who's eligible for benefits on the record of a living parent is calculated based on 50% of the parent's primary insurance . . . Read More

Update On An Earlier Question
Hi Jerry,
I told you of my experience with Social Security attempting to suspend my benefit for several months until I am 70 in March.
I decided to ask Sherrod Brown's office for assistance. I explained my dilemma of 4 different representatives telling me I wasn't allowed to do it. There had been no indication my benefits were being suspended after the 4th rep agreed to submit a request saying there was a 10 month back-up . I mailed in the permission form Senator Brown's staff said they needed to proceed. Last Wednesday I received a call from the local SS district . . . Read More

What Will Happen To My SSDI If I Get A Settlement From My Former Employer?
Hi Jerry,
Quick question. I will use easy numbers/dates for sample.
Let’s say I am terminated on 4/15/18 and I earned $50,000 per year. I
received SSDI as of 4/16/18 to present.
Now three years after receiving SSDI, my employers consider a settlement. I
request three years back pay (until 4/15/21) and two years front pay (until
4/15/23) for a total of five years for $250,000.
Let’s say I receive $250,000 on 4/15/21, but I already received three years
of SSDI. The $250,000 has back pay of three years included which made me . . . Read More

Is There Some Way To Use File And Suspend To Allow My Wife To Collect As A Spouse?
My spouse is 65, we are separated over 10 years, I am 62 and working.
We would like to finalize divorce.
I understand that if she applied for spousal benefits now, they would continue without 2 year interruption as an ex after divorce.
Since I don't collect benefits, she can't qualify to apply for spousal benefits. Is there any way for me to use a file and suspend strategy to get around this? Perhaps she would qualify for spousal benefits pending my removal of the suspension, and then following divorce could begin collecting as an ex?
Or does a long . . . Read More

Is It True That I Can Collect My Current SS Retirement Benefits Along With My Husband's Retirement Funds?
My husband passed in January of this year and I have been told by family that I can collect my current SS retirement funds ALONG WITH his retirement funds he was receiving. Is this correct information? What do I need to do to file for the both benefits if so?
Thank you, Lucky O
Hi Lucky O. I'm sorry for your loss. No, it's not true that you can collect both your own benefits and your husband's benefits at the same time. If you apply for both survivor benefits and your own Social Security retirement benefits, you can only be paid up to the higher of . . . Read More

Why Doesn't My Social Security Statement Come Up?
My wife just turned 65 (yesterday) and has applied for social security and I also applied for spousal benefits off of her. I just logged into my account and see that "Your Social Security Statement" does not come up. I am planning to let my benefits ride until I turn 70. So why cant I see the total month to month any more. The last one that I had printed was from Feb of this year. I searched all over the SS website for that total and cant seem to find it. Can you help me?
Thanks
John

What Month Should I Choose As My Month To Start My Benefit?
Hi Larry, I turn 66 in the end of September 2021, how far in advance do I need to apply for social security?
If my full retirement age is 66 and 2 months what month to choose as my month to start my benefit?
When I will receive my first payment? Thanks, Eva.
Hi Eva. If you'll be claiming Social Security retirement benefits and if you want to start your benefits effective with the month you reach full retirement age (FRA) you'd choose to start your benefits effective with November 2021. However, that may not be your best option. The best option . . . Read More

Should I Pay My Medicare Premium In Advance Even If It Will Later Be Withheld From My Benefit Payment?
Hi Larry,
I have a similar question to one Jerry posed to you a couple of years ago regarding potential overpayment of Medicare premium when you go on Medicare long before receiving your SSA benefit. In my case, however, my quarterly Meficare payment is due April 25 (for months May-July) and I will begin receiving SSA at end of May (due to late April birthday), so I would presumably be overpaying 3 months of Medicare premiums (rather than just one in Jerry's case).
I am inclined to just skip the April quarterly Medicare payment (for May-July) since the May premium . . . Read More

If I Resign From My Job Will I Have To Report It To The Railroad Retirement Board?
I have been receiving my husband's social security benefit since 2013 while I am still working. If I resign from the job I am currently serving on will I have to report this information to the Railroad Retirement Board?
Hi. I'm sorry, but there isn't nearly enough information in your question for me to be able to give you a meaningful answer. You say you are receiving your husband's Social Security, so I assume that means you're collecting either Social Security spousal or survivor benefits. I have no idea how the Railroad Retirement Board might be . . . Read More

Will I Be Penalized Because Of My Earnings?
Hi will be eligible to take my Social Security starting in June of this year as I will be 62. I have a part-time job at a university where I will gross more than the $1540 per month for that first year I am eligible. Does that mean I will be penalized and I’m not able to take my Social Security or do I pay back one dollar for every two dollars I make?
Thank you!
Hi. The monthly earnings test limit in 2021 is actually $1580, not $1540. If you earn more than $1580 in every month this year, then you couldn't be paid any benefits based on the monthly . . . Read More
