How Can My Deceased Boyfriend's Last Benefit Payment Be Resolved?

Hi Larry
My boyfriend, no legal arrangement was made, recently died. He did leave a will with a common friend. He died January 12. Social Security pays by direct deposit the 3rd Wednesday of the month. The bank returned that payment. My understanding from the SocialSecurity.gov website is that his estate was entitled to that check as payment in January is for December. His estate would not be entitled to anything after January.
How is this resolved?
Thank you Karen

Hi. It doesn't sound like you'd qualify for any Social Security benefits based on your own earnings history. You might be able to qualify for benefits based on your spouse's earnings history, but only if she's drawing Social Security retirement . . . Read More

Is There Any Way For Me To Get A Larger Social Security Check?

my husband is 71 and collects 2,135 dollars a month.I am 72 years old and get 915 dollars a month. Is there any way I can get a larger social security check?

Hi. You don't mention if you're drawing your own Social Security retirement benefits, or spousal benefits, or a combination of the two. If you're drawing just your own retirement benefits, then you might be able to qualify for additional spousal benefits. However, you could only qualify for additional spousal benefits if your husband's primary insurance amount (PIA) is more than twice as much as your . . . Read More

Can A Person Get A Loan On Their Disability Benefits?

Can a person that receives disability benefits get a loan on their benefits turn around bright

Hi. By getting a loan on disability benefits, I assume you're referring to asking Social Security to pay a lump sum amount now that would be paid back in installments or by deductions from future benefits. The answer to that is no. There is no provision in the Social Security law that would allow a person to be paid future benefits in advance, nor can they choose to withdraw their past contributions (i.e. the Social Security taxes they've paid) in return for . . . When Can I Start My Application?

I want to retire in June 2021. When can I start my application?

Is It Possible For Me To Claim Spousal Benefits From My Ex-Spouse While I Continue Working?

Larry, is it possible for me to claim (50% for 4 years) spousal benefits from my ex of more than 10 years when he retires & begins To collect his while I continue to work or not. And then after the 4 years, apply under my own social Security. I would be eligible for ss retirement 2 months before him but trying to maximize the best process and timing.

Hi. Assuming that you were born after January 1 1954, you couldn't claim divorced spousal benefits without claiming your own Social Security retirement benefits at the same time. And, if you claim either . . . Read More

Will Your Software Be Able To Show Me The Impact Of Future Wages On My Benefit Rate?

My husband died in 2010 when he was 46 and I 47, Since then I have continuously claimed a widow's benefit, as I have sole care of our developmentally disabled child (now age 27), I have worked part time during most years, but now have an opportunity to pursue a full-time job. I doubt I can achieve an earnings record anywhere near my late husband's. Will your software be able to show me the impact of future wages on my own record, as well as whether I can/should suspend collecting my widow's benefit? I remain my son's primary caregiver and expect to do so well beyond reaching . . . Read More

Can You File For Social Security Disability If You Already Receive Early Social Security Benefits?

Can you file for social security disability if your already receiving an early social security benefit.

Hi. Yes. As long as it would be possible for you to qualify for Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits prior to your full retirement age (FRA), you can apply for SSDI benefits. However, if you do qualify for SSDI benefits you can't be paid both SSDI and regular Social Security retirement benefits at the same time. You can only be paid up to the higher of the 2 benefit rates.

Best, Jerry

Can My Disabled Child Switch To Drawing On My Record When I Retire?

My son became disabled at age 19 and filed for benefits on my husband's Social Security, as he was also disabled. My so is an adult now and gets just a little over $800 a month between his SSDI and SSI. I will soon be retiring and I was wondering if my son could switch over to receive half of my monthly benefit. Is that a possibility? My husband is now receiving regular monthly benefits now bc he is over 65.

Hi. Yes, if your son has been continuously disabled since before he reached age 22 then he should qualify for disabled adult child's (DAC) . . . Read More
