Can I Get A Second Trial Work Period If I Haven't Worked For 12 Years?

May I please ask if a disabled individual is allowed to attempt a second twp if they haven't worked for 12 years? I am disabled and can only work part time, on good days when my condition is less severe... but would very much like to work even if I am limited to ten-twelve hours due to my condition bc it would help me mentally to feel productive...or have I lost that opportunity bc I had used up my twp and had an overpayment which went to appeal court and my case was won and I was reinstated....I don't want to risk losing my ssdi benefits as they are my sole lifeline and I . . . How Do I Make Sure That My Ex-Husband's Record Reflects The Credits To Which He Was Entitled?

Hi Larry,

I helped my ex husband file for social security disability benefits around 2014 for his illness and he was approved benefits. I was unaware at the time of doing his on line application of this time should maybe count as credits for his 4 years served in the 1990's . My ex husband has passed in 2016 from his illness and I am single mother raising his son that is 15, I wanted to know how do I go about making sure that his record reflects his credit if he was entitled to receive this on his social security record.

Thank You,
Jodie

What Should I Do About Applying For Benefits?

I am American, 70 in January. I am in Paris separated from my (French) husband, but not legally for now. I have to apply for my SS retirement (it's barely 3 months in advance) but I will be relocating to the United States. I'm letting my carte de sejour to stay expire. I already have my U.S. address and will be living there. I would have left by now but making arrangements for my things etc. with current coronavirus restrictions is proving difficult - I can't go back/forth as I thought I could and need to apply now but am told not to go through the U.S. Consulate here because . . . Is It Wise To Collect Early When I Am So Close To Age 70?

I am currently receiving a spousal benefit of $1194 and turn 70 in June 2021. Would it be wise to collect my own benefit of $1854 six months early at age 66.5 to receive $708 per month more from Jan to June 2021. In June at age 70 I will receive $1902. I believe it will take a little over six years to break even. Is this wise to collect early when I am so close to 70? I am in excellent health and don't see any issues with a short retirement.

Hi,

Waiting until the month you reach age 70 to claim your own benefits is probably your best bet, but other . . . Read More

Do I have to know what my benefit would have been at 65 to use your program? How do I get this figure?
I started taking SS at 70 and need to know this to find out when my wife, age 64, needs to start hers. Her DOB: 4/14/1956. Thanks. Happy to buy the software, but SS won't answer my question online....

No, not at all. Our software (https://maximizemysocialsecurity.com/purchase) could do all of the computations to analyze your wife's options using your current benefit rate, and . . . Read More

Who Is Right, Me Or The Social Security Employee I Spoke With?

I just got off the phone with our local social security office. I explained to the agent that I have continued working after retirement, and the last few years I saw an increase in my social security payment , for instance 2018 displaced one of the 35 years social security used to arrive at my current payment. The agent told me that was not true, that once I retired whether I continued to work or not, my benefit was not recalculated, that I was locked in, that what I was seeing was a cost of living increase. The reason I called him was I had not seen an increase this year even . . . Read More

Is This Statement Correct?

Hi Larry,
Can you tell me if the following statement is correct?
**If I start collecting SS benefits at age 62 and my spouse waits until full retirement age.... and when one dies, the survivor will get to claim the maximized benefit as their own -- and that would be my spouses benefit.
It will be significantly larger than mine.

Hi,

If by 'maximized benefit' you mean the higher of the couple's benefit rates, that statement would be true assuming that the surviving spouse doesn't start drawing survivor benefits prior to their full . . . Read More

Will I Ever Receive Spousal Benefits?

My wife died at the age of 37 in 2009 while our children were 2 and 6 years old at the time. They have received child benefits from SS, but I have never received spousal benefits as I was told by SS there was a maximum family benefit. When my son turned 18, his benefit stopped while my younger child still receives hers. I was again told I would not receive spousal benefits due to the family maximum benefit being reached even though SS publications state I should receive benefits as the parent of a child under 16. Will I ever receive spousal benefits? I have not remarried. Thank . . . Read More

Will My SSD Benefits Change At All When I Turn 65?

Hi, I turn 65 next will my ssd benefits change at all ? I also receive a pension will anything change next year like it did when I turned 62 ?? Thank you

Hi,

Nothing will change when you turn 65. Since you were apparently born in 1955, your full retirement age (FRA) is age 66 & 2 months. At that time, your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits will automatically convert to regular Social Security retirement benefits, but that almost certainly won't result in any change in your benefit rate.

Some pensions can affect Social Security . . . Read More
