Am I Entitled To My Ex-Spouse's Social Security Benefits In Addition To My SSDI?

I collect SSDI. I was married 20yrs. Am I entitled to my exspoue’s social security benefits?

Hi,

If your ex-spouse is living, you could potentially qualify for divorced spousal benefits in addition to your Social Security disability benefit (SSDI) at some point in time, but only if 50% of your ex's primary insurance amount (PIA) is more than your full SSDI rate. A person's PIA is equal to their Social Security retirement benefit rate if they start drawing their benefits at full retirement age (FRA), or their full SSDI rate. Additionally, in order to . . . Do I Understand Correctly That My Wife Could Potentially Start Out Drawing Spousal Benefits And Change To Her Own Benefits At Age 70?

I'm 71 and have been taking full SS benefit. My wife will begin SS when she turns 66.5 yr old. I understand that she will automatically get the larger of either her own 66.5 SS amount OR a spousal benefit of 1/2 my amount. Do I understand correctly that if it is the spousal benefit, she can change at age 70 to her own benefit at the age 70 amount, but if they give her her own 66.5 yr amount, she is stuck with that amount for life? Spousal + her age 70 amount would be a better deal long term, but is she locked out from that if they automatically give her her own 66.5 amount? . . . Read More

Where Can I Find My Current And Age 70 Benefit Rates?

I was born in 1952 and filed for spousal benefits with a restricted application in March of this year.
I no longer see estimates on the My Social Security statement since I’ve started taking spousal benefits.
How do I determine-where can I find my own current and 70year benefit estimate as were shown before?

Hi,

What you experienced is one of the limitations of Social Security's website. For whatever reason, they stop providing online benefit estimates to people who are already drawing benefits, even if they're only drawing spousal . . . Read More

What Is The Best Option For My Wife?

I am 66 and started collecting $2,500/mo last July. My wife will be 66 in Aoril of 2021 and can collect $1,900/mo shortly thereafter. Should she proceed or is there a better way to proceed?

Hi,

Your wife will only be eligible for her own benefit since it's clearly more than half of your full rate. She could apply for her benefits any time between now and age 70, and basically, the sooner she starts drawing the lower her monthly rate will be. It mostly comes down to which option she's most comfortable with.

If you die before your wife she then . . . Read More

What Are Your Thoughts On Our Case?

In February 2016 , at age 66, I (Michael, husband) filed and suspended. At that time, my disabled daughter, Beth, had been receiving SSI benefits, and also was receiving a separate SSDI benefit, believed to be based on her record, in the amount of $ 419/month. Based on my filing and suspending, Beth was granted a benefit based on my record to replace her SSI benefit; she continued to receive the SSDI based on her record. At that time, I would have been entitled to $2500/month, and the total of Beth’s two benefits approximated that. (Her disability was established before she was . . . Read More

Can I Trust The Survivor Rate I Was Told That My Child Would Receive?

My wife and I have begun planning for our future family, and that includes determining how much life insurance we need. To avoid purchasing excess life insurance, I looked up the tentative amount of the Survivor's Benefit generated by my earnings to date. I was pretty surprised at the amount payable to my child if I were to die this year: $2,144 a month!

That's a significant amount of money and one that suggests I can materially reduce the amount of life insurance that I would otherwise purchase. It also raises the following question: can I really trust this amount or . . . Read More

Hi,

Yes. Part B of Medicare is optional so you're free to drop that coverage at any time. Part A coverage is mandatory if you're receiving Social Security benefits, but as long as you are eligible for benefits then your Part A coverage is premium . . . Read More

Will Social Security Automatically Switch Me From Spousal Benefits To My Own Benefits At Age 70?

I have been getting spousal SS benefits. I turn 70 early January. Do I need to notify Soc. Sec. or will they automatically switch me to my own benefits. Thanks

Hi,

Social Security can't switch you to drawing your own benefits unless and until you apply for those benefits. Assuming that you have enough work credits to qualify for benefits based on your own work record, the only way that you could be collecting only spousal benefits is if you specifically excluded your own Social Security retirement benefits from the scope of your application when you . . . What Are Your Thoughts On When I Should File?

Hi Larry:

I’m looking at when to take social security. I’m 61, retired, and had been planning to wait until my FRA (66 yrs, 10 mon) to file. But my older wife, also not working and who does not have enough credits for her own benefits, is already at her FRA (66 yrs) and could collect spousal benefits as soon as I file. Unlike myself, there is no incentive for her to wait as her spousal benefit won’t increase. If I file at 62, I will receive a reduced amount, but she will collect 50% of my FRA amount rather than my age 62 amount. It is tempting to file early as her . . . Read More

How Would Filing Early Affect My Future Widow's Benefits?

Dear Larry, I wish I would have found this several months ago, which would have greatly reduced my stress and frustration. What a wonderful service! My husband and I had carefully planned our retirement strategy and then planned it again based upon the significant law changes five years ago. I am almost seven years younger than my husband, so we decided to definitely wait for his filing for retirement benefits until he was seventy because he planned to continue working past seventy, etc.. Because at the time, we were both in great health, we also decided that I would wait until . . . Read More
