Can I Receive My Full Social Security And A Survivor Pension From My Wife's Civil Service Work?

My wife is retired from federal government civil service. She pays for survivors benefits to be paid to me upon her passing. I will draw from my social security at retirement. Will I be entitled to all of the survivors benefit as well as my full social security if she passes before me? Thank you

Hi,

Yes. Pensions based on work for a government agency can't cause a person's Social Security benefit to be reduced unless the pension is based on the person's own government work. Therefore, your Social Security benefits won't be affected if you receive a . . . Read More

Does SSA Affect The Amount Of Benefits I Receive From SSI?

Does my ssa effect my the amount of benefits I receive from ssi?

Hi,

Yes. If you qualify for both Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments, your SSI payments would be reduced dollar for dollar by at least all but the first $20 of your monthly Social Security benefits. SSI is a needs based program that's designed to supplement any other income you may have, including Social Security benefits.

Can I Get Both Social Security And A VA WIdower's Pension?

I am on a widower's pension from the VA can I get my Social Security I'll be 64 can I get both

Hi,

My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, not VA benefits. I can only tell you that any Social Security benefits that you qualify for can be paid regardless of whether or not you're drawing VA benefits. However, you'll need to check with the VA to find out what if any effect drawing Social Security benefits might have on your VA benefits.

Can I Delay My 401a Pension Payouts Until Age 70 To Defer GPO Offset?

I am trying to find out two things regarding the Government Pension Offset provision: I currently work in higher education that does not pay into SS. I hope to retire soon...I have a 401A pension plan through the university.

My question is twofold:

1. Once I retire, can I delay by 401a pension payouts until 70 in order to get the full Survivor Benefit that is available due to the death of my husband (he paid into SS his whole life)?

I found an article on the SS website that seems to contradict itself, unless my interpretation is wrong. . . . Read More

Will My Wife And I Forfeit Our Future Social Security Benefits If We Move Outside Of The U.S.?

Both my wife and I are US Citizens (born and raised). I am 50 years old and have been working as a US Citizen in the United States and meet the 35 year contribution target (as I started part-time when I was 15) but considering making a change in our status and becoming American Nationals residing in the US Virgin Islands and was wondering how that may impact our future social security benefits. Will will we forfeit our social security that was paid into the system by making this change? and can we live in any other countries as US Citizens and still collect our Social Security . . . Should I Try To Keep Working?

I am 60 in Sept. husband 64 in May. If I lost him, now or when I am 62, he already gets SS since 62, should I try to keep working? Poor health, both of us. My SS would never be as much as his because I took 23 yrs off to raise his kids. If somehow I can keep working, should I? Can I get my benefits at 62 and his also? Thank you for your advice. Also, my mother divorced my dad when I was only 2. If he dies before her, can she get his benefits? They were only married a couple of years though. He tried to get out of paying child support for me too. He moved on and had another . . . Read More

If I File Now Would We Receive Our Total Monthly Benefits By November?

65 in Feb 2020. If I file now, my monthly benefit is $2630. I have 4 dependents under 18. Estimating their total monthly benefit of $2000. My max monthly benefit is $4956. I do make $72k a year. Doing all the calculations, not being at max retirement age, and with my yearly earnings... 72k - 18,240 ÷ 2 = roughly 27k. Roughly figuring $4630 a month in benefits, if I file now, would I start to receive the total monthly benefits by Nov? Why is this so complicated? Thank you for your help. Also, do you offer retirement planning on minimizing taxes? Again, thank you.

Can I Collect My Monthly SS Payment And My Tier 2 RR Payment?

I have worked the last 26 years paying into SS but early in my career I worked 22 years under RR retirement. If I retire at 70 (in a few months) my SS monthly payment will be higher than my Tier 1 RR by $440 a month. (I am currently collecting my RR retirement and half my Tier 2 payment). My question, since my SS monthly payment will be higher will I be able to collect my monthly SS payment and my Tier 2 RR retirement payment? Thank You

Hi,

Yes. If you file for both Social Security (SS) and Railroad Retirement (RR) benefits, you'll be paid the higher . . . Read More
