What Happens When I Turn 62?
Hi Larry,
I just turned 60. I've been on a combination of SSDI/SSI for a long time due to disability. I get $275 SSI because my $679 SSDI payment alone is below the limit. I also get Medicare AND Medi-Cal (I'm in California). What happens when I turn 62? What about when I reach full retirement age? What if I got married or went into a domestic partnership?
Hi,
Nothing will necessarily change when you turn 62, and nothing significant will change when you reach full retirement age (FRA) other than your Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits . . . Read More

Would Filing For Her Benefits At Age 62 Affect What My Wife Can Draw Once I Claim My Benefits?
I am 65 years of age and plan to claim my SS benefit at 66 & 2 months to get my normal benefit. My wife will soon be 62 and has earned a SS benefit that is substantially lower than mine as she worked minimally while we reared three children. My question relates to her filing for benefits at age 62. Will this in any way affect what she can draw once I begin claiming a benefit as well? When she reaches her full benefit age, will she be able to then claim the spousal benefit of 50% of my benefit? Will her claiming a benefit at age 62 affect her widow benefit? Thank you.

Is My Brother Eligible To Receive A Stimulus Check?
My brother is 47 and on Social Security. Is he eligible to receive a stimulus check that the government is issuing out . Thank you I appreciate the answer. Sincerely Coleman
Hi Coleman,
I'm sorry, but my expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, and stimulus payments are not Social Security benefits. The IRS has set up the following website with information regarding stimulus payments: https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus-tax-relief-and-economic-impact-payments . . . Read More

What Should My Sister Do To Get Survivor Benefits?
My sister is 70 yoa. She collects a pension from the Dallas PD of $50,000. Her husband deceased two years ago. He was getting SS benefits when he passed. My sister has tried on two occasions to collect survivor benefits but was denied twice telling her that she makes too much money to get survivor benefits.
What should she do as I am told that she is entitled to his benefits.
Hi,
A person can be technically entitled to Social Security benefits without being eligible to be paid any benefits, and it sounds like that's probably true of your sister . . . Read More

Will We Ever Get The Stimulus Checks?
My husband and I filed a joint return for 2018. We both get SS. We also used IRA monies tha year, but were able to deduct that from Federal Income tax’s due to medical expenses. So, we neither owed money to the IRS, nor got a refund. Will we ever get the stimulus checks? We are in the income bracket to receive the full stimulus. I get no information on the IRS site.
Hi,
I'm sorry, but my expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, so I'm simply unable to answer questions about stimulus payments.
Best, Jerry

If I Pass Away Would My Wife Be Entitled To My Retirement?
My wife is currently retired under the terms of the old federal government pension plan. I will be retiring soon on social security. I would like to know if I pass away would my wife be entitled to my retirement and if not what would be the best way for her to maximize her potential income. Thank you
Hi,
Assuming that your wife is already receiving her pension, It sounds like any Social Security spousal or survivor benefits for which she'd qualify would likely be offset by 2/3rds of the amount of her government pension ( . . . Read More

I been on disability for quite awhile age 58 now. My husband passed at age 66. He was just getting retirement. I get widow benefits with my disability. Why can't I qualify for his spousal? He was getting 3000 a mtg now I dont get it
Hi,
I'm sorry for your loss.
You can't get a both Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits and full widow's benefits at the same time. You could, however, possibly qualify for a partial disabled widow's benefit in addition to your SSDI benefits, but only if your husband's primary insurance amount (PIA) is higher . . . Read More

Would It Be Best To File For My Own Social Security At Age 62 And Then File On My Ex's Record When He Turns 62?
I will be 62 in Nov and no longer work. my x is 57 and still working. Will I be able to start my social security at 62 then draw on his when he turns 62 because he make more money? Would that be the best situation for me?
Hi,
You can't file for your own benefits and later switch to drawing just divorced spousal benefits. However, if you were married for at least 10 years and if your ex's primary insurance amount (PIA) is more than twice as much as your PIA, you could file for your own benefits as early as age 62 and then get additional divorced . . .
