Is There Any Problem With My Plan?

I plan to take my social security at my full retirement age of 66 and 2 months. In 3 years, when my spouse is 70 and files for his, I plan to file for spousal benefits which will be greater than my benefits. Is there any problem with this plan? Would my collecting benefits on my own impact the ability of my spouses's social security to grow at 8% until he collects at 70? I understand that my spousal benefit will be only 50% of his Primary Insurance Amount. Will the benefits we each receive when he is 70 be the same whether I ever collect on my own or not?

Will I Receive An Increase In My SS Or A One Time Stimulus Check?

Thanks for taking my question..

I receive SS, but I am a bit confused on this stimulus check?
Will I receive an increase in my SS for 6 months or will I receive a one time stimulus check or both?
Thanks
Dennis

Hi Dennis,

The economic relief package passed by Congress did not contain any changes to Social Security benefits, so your Social Security benefit rate won't change as a result of that legislation.

I can only answer questions about Social Security benefits, so if you have questions about stimulus payments you'll . . . Read More

If I Die Can My Wife Collect My Social Security Benefits Once She Turns 62?

Aloha
If I die before my wife can she collect my social security benefits, once she turns 62,
Even if she is:
Not a us citizen
Decides to move back to Japan
and surrenders her green card.

Hi,

Actually, your wife could potentially qualify for widow's benefits as early as age 60 in the event of your death. And, since the U.S. has a Social Security totalization agreement with Japan, moving to Japan would not cause your wife to lose her widow's benefits assuming that she's a Japanese citizen.

Best, Jerry

What Can I Do To Get Benefits From The Record Of My Common-Law Spouse?

I was commonlaw married in PA since 1991. We were together for 31 yrs and raised a family. We split and I moved to NY. I've applied 3 times and been refused. They won't even get back to me. I will be 67 this year and if accepted will pay more for medicare. I've called the main office and my local. They're telling me to appeal for the 2nd time. Getting tired of the runaround.

Hi,

If you've applied for benefits and your claim was disallowed, your only options are to file an appeal or file a new claim. Appeals must normally be filed within 60 days of . . . Read More

What Benefits Am I Eligible For?

HELLO I'M 51 YEARS OLD, MY WIFE DIED 9 YEARS AGO AND WAS ON SSI. WHAT BENEFITS AM I ELIGIBLE FOR, IF ANY AND WHEN?

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss. If your wife was only receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI), then you wouldn't qualify for any survivor benefits. SSI does not pay auxiliary or survivor benefits to family members of the SSI recipient.

On the other hand, if your wife was insured for or receiving Social Security retirement or disability benefits then you may qualify for survivor benefits. In order to be eligible for survivor . . . Read More

Can I Take My Reduced Benefits Now And Switch To My Husband's Benefit In May 2021?

I've recently retired at the age of 64. FRA is 66, 4 mos. My husband passed away in 2017 at the age of 64. He hadn't applied for retirement benefits. I have spoken to 2 people from SSA regarding my application for benefits and got 2 different answers. The first said that I should take my own reduced retirement benefits first and then switch to survivors benefit from my husband after it had increased. My husband's benefit is significantly higher. But the second time I was told that I had to take survivors benefit first because my husband's was higher than my retirement benefits . . . Read More

Would I Have A Maximum Annual Earnings Limit If I Start Drawing Benefits Now?

I am at full retirement age (67) and continue to earn income from various consulting projects. I am thinking of filing for SS benefits since my business is slow to non-existent, and would like to know if there is a maximum annual earning amount and/or penalty, and if my benefits will continue to increase until age 70 if I continue to have annual income. Thanks!

Hi,

No, since you're at least full retirement age (FRA) there is no limit on how much income you can have and still be able to draw all of your benefits.

Your benefit rate could . . . Read More

If I Die Will My Ex Be Able To Draw From My Social Security?

I've been divorced since 1991. I'm retired now and 67 years old. I was married 15 years. If I die will my ex be able to draw from my social security?

Hi,

Potentially, yes, but your ex could only qualify for survivor benefits from your record if he or she is unmarried, or if married got married at age 60 or older. Also, your ex would need to be at least age 60, or at least age 50 and disabled, in order to qualify for survivor benefits, and if he or she is already drawing their own benefits they'd only be eligible for survivor benefits if the survivor . . . Can I File For My Own SS Benefit Now And Then Switch To My Husband's At Full Retirement Age?

My husband passed away 4/2018. I am going to wait until full retirement age, 66 & 2 months to collect his maximum benefit. I am currently 63. Can I collect my own SS benefit now and then switch to his at full retirement Age? I need his higher amount at retirement and don't want to jeopardize losing that option. Thank you.

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

You couldn't switch to drawing just widow's benefits after you've started drawing your own benefits, but you can file for your own benefits now and then file for unreduced widow's benefits at . . . Read More
