Will I Pay Income Tax In The Philippines From My U.S. Pension?

I am a US citizen born in the Philippines. If I wanted to be a dual citizen, will I pay income tax in the Philippines from my pension in USA?

Hi. My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, not tax laws. All I can tell you is that since you are a U.S. citizen you can still collect your U.S. Social Security benefits even if you move to the Philippines.

Best, Jerry

Will I Be Able Collect On My Father's Record?

Hello, I am collecting SSDI based on my own record, and I receive dependent benefits for my two children. Because I became disabled at 21 and did not have many work credits, the family maximum for my record is very low; about 1.3 times my primary amount. When my father retires at 70 next year will I be able to collect on his record and have my children collect on mine? Thank you!

Hi. If you're not married then you could potentially qualify for disabled adult child's (DAC) benefits when your father starts collecting his benefits, but you wouldn't actually . . . Read More

Does A Divorced Spouse Who Remarries Have To Wait A Year To Be Able To Collect Spousal Benefits On Their New Spouse's Account?

If an individual has been divorced for over 10 years and re-marries after age 60. She has been receiving spousal benefits from her ex.
After she re-marries , does she have to wait a year before receiving spousal benefits from her new spouse? Her new spouse has been receiving SS benefits. Is there an exemption, or does she have to wait a year for new spousal benefits, or can she keep her old spousal benefits for a year after her new marriage?

Thanks.

Hi. Not necessarily. There is a one year duration of marriage requirement for spousal benefit . . . Read More

How Can I Know If Social Security Is Right About My Free Military Wage Credits?

My question is about free wage credits for those who served in the military from 1957 to 1997.
According to Social Security they updated my annual earnings with the free wage credits.
But I belong to a military organization (AAFMAA ) that sends me an annual document that shows what my estimated annual earnings should be, and they are higher than the data shown on my Social Security statement. I sent them a copy of my annual earnings every year I was in the military.
The AAFMAA document says that normally SS won't update the record till I file for benefits and . . . Read More

How Will Earning $25,000 Annually Affect My Social Security Benefits?

I plan on retiring at 63 I make 25,000 a year as a seasonal employee for Nassau county how will this affect my social security benefits?

Hi. Until you reach your full retirement age (FRA), Social Security would need to withhold $1 of your Social Security benefits for each $2 that you earn in excess of that year's annual earnings test exempt amount. In 2022, the exempt amount for people under FRA is $19,560 (https://www.ssa.gov/benefits/retirement/planner/whileworking.html). . . . Read More

Will The COLAs That Occur Before I Reach Age 62 Increase My Future Benefits?

I am 60 years old and have necessary 40 credits for Social Security benefits. I plan on applying for my benefits at age 62 in 2024. Will the COLAs issued from 2002-2004 and until I reach age 62 positively affect my SS benefits in 2004. Thank You

Hi. No. If you turn age 62 in 2024 and on any day other than January 1st, then the first Social Security cost of living (COLA) increase that will be added to your Social Security retirement benefit rate will be the one that occurs in January 2025.

Is There Anything I Can Do To Get Medicare Overpayment Back?

I got a bill for 6 months of Medicare and paid it, then my SS benefits began and they are deducting Medicare from my benefits, That was 8 months ago and I have not received a refund even though I have called twice to ask for the refund and my account shows a balance of the full amount of the payment. Is there anything I can do to get my $850.50 back? Thank you.

Hi. It sounds like you've already done the things that I would normally suggest. In my experience, duplicate Part B premium payments were automatically refunded by Social Security within a few . . . Read More

Can A Surviving Spouse Repay The Benefits Collected By Their Deceased Spouse In Order To Be Able To Qualify For A Higher Survivor Benefit?

Question 1: my sister-in-law just passed away at 62 after receiving 4 or 5 social security checks. Can her husband who is 64 and also collecting social security since 62, repay those checks and be entitled to collect at her higher (maybe 70 years old?) rate when he turns 70?
Question 2: I plan to not collect social security until I turn 70 only because if I go first I want my wife to have my maximum benefit. How early can she start taking benefits (like 62?) without compromising her entitlement to my maximum benefit by waiting to 70 for me to collect? I hear conflicting . . . Read More
