If I Start Drawing Reduced Spousal Benefits And My Husband Dies Before I Reach FRA Can I Wait Until FRA To Get An Unreduced Survivor Rate?

My spouse took his SS benefit at his full retirement age. If I decide to take SS benefit at age 63 (34 months early) and increase my benefit by opting for a spousal benefit instead I realize I'll be receiving a reduced benefit. My question is... If my spouse then dies before I reach my full retirement age will my survivor benefit be reduced automatically because I've opted for a spousal benefit instead of my own or do I have the option to remain on my spousal benefit amount and delay survivor benefit until I reach full retirement age?

Would I Be Allowed To File For Spousal Benefits Now And Wait Until FRA To Switch To My Own Benefits?

Hi Larry,

I'm 64 . My husband is 70 and he has been collected SS benefits since age 68. I want to file for benefit but not sure to file spousal or my own. My estimated PIA will be slightly lower than my husband. if I apply for spousal benefits now and wait till my FRA (66 and 4 mo.) to switch to my personal benefits, will that be allowed? If allowed, what is the consequence?

Thanks in advance for your time. Your expertise is greatly appreciated!

Scenario: Husband will retire FRA of 70 (9/23/1953) wife (Susan 7/22/1959) will file for SS at 62 (only 18 years of employment) Question: If wife collects her SS at 62, can husband collect half of wife's (meager -ha) SS earning when wife files for SS until his FRA of 70 (at which point wife transitions to receiving a percentage of his SS.
I cannot find an answer anywhere to this question. Thank you so much!

Can I Switch From SS Disability To SS Retirement Benefits Now That I'm 62?

I'm 62. On ss disability since 2016.
Can I change over to retirement SS at my age? or do I have to wait till 66 +2 months?

Hi,

You could, but you probably wouldn't be happy with the results. Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits are calculated in essentially the same manner as your full retirement age (FRA) Social Security retirement benefit is calculated. The only material difference is that fewer years of earnings are sometimes used to calculate SSDI rates than the 35 years used to calculate retirement benefits.

Can I Draw Spousal Benefits At Age 62 And Claim My Own Benefits Later?

Larry, I am 62 and still working part time. My husband is 73 and has been drawing SS since age 62. I believe that my own social security payment amount would be higher than his. Can I draw on his benefits now (spousal benefits) and then claim my own benefits at 65? I was confused by SS website because it sounds like if my benefits are higher than my husband's, they would pay that amount and not let me claim spousal benefits. I hope you can help me. Thanks so

Am I Eligible To Claim Spousal Benefits While I Wait To Claim My Benefits?

My wife will be at her FRA (66) in Dec 2020. She plans to start her SS benefit then. It's estimated to be ~ $1750/MTH. I'm a bit younger & my FRA is 66.5 in Aug 2023. Thru our married life I was the higher income provider. My benefit at FRA is estimated at $3100/mth. Am I eligible to claim spousal benefits from my wife's benefit while I wait to claim my full benefit in 2023? If so, how much would the spousal benefit be?
