Hi,
I am 63 yrs old and getting ready to retire but I want to apply for disability because I having problems with my hands and I work on a computer. Can you suggest the route I should take.
Hi,
I retired at age 60 and I'm 64 now. My FRA is Feb 2023 and I was planning to start my SS then. I have been living off my company pension and dividends from $2M in investments without touching any of my principal. My total retirement income is a little more than my final working salary, so I didn't have to change my spending. My Father passed at 80 and Mother passed at 72. I don't need to worry about spousal benefits at this time.
I am a 67 year old divorcee and was married to my ex-husband for 35 years (neither one of us has remarried). My social security that I could collect is very minimal compared to my ex- husband's. I am still working and would like to start collecting my SS but want to know if I start collecting on my Social Security, can I change to collecting my ex-husbands (50%) when he starts collecting his SS or will I have to stay with mine? My ex probably won't start collecting his SS until he turns 70 in 2 years. Thank you.
Hi,
I'm 71 and have been taking full SS benefit. My wife will begin SS when she turns 66.5 yr old. I understand that she will automatically get the larger of either her own 66.5 SS amount OR a spousal benefit of 1/2 my amount. Do I understand correctly that if it is the spousal benefit, she can change at age 70 to her own benefit at the age 70 amount, but if they give her her own 66.5 yr amount, she is stuck with that amount for life? Spousal + her age 70 amount would be a better deal long term, but is she locked out from that if they automatically give her her own 66.5 amount?
I have been on SS Disability since 2017. Can I Switch From SS Disability To SS Retirement Benefits Now That I'm 65 and 1 month?
Hi,
My brother is collecting his SS. His wife will be 62 next year. Can she file to get her spouses until she reaches full retirement age and then change to her SS? Thanks!
Hi,
No, she can't. If your sister-in-law files for spousal benefits she'll be deemed to also be filing for her own Social Security retirement benefits at the same time. She'll then only be eligible for essentially the higher of the two benefit rates, and her benefit rate will be reduced for age if she starts drawing before her full retirement age.
Hi Larry!
Update on my question: Is Social Security just forgetting the January 2, 1954 rule for spousal benefits??!
I am 74 years old and have been drawing my full benefits since my full retirement age (currently $2,315 per month). My wife is age 62 and is eligible for early retirement. Her full retirement at age 66 and 8 months is $1,169 and her age 62 benefit is $841. If she starts drawing her early retirement of $841, will she still be able to draw one half of mine at her full retirement or would it be reduced and if reduced, by how much. In other words by this example how much would we both be drawing?
Hi,
Am 65yr old widow...at about 55 was represented by binder & binder. At adjudication was represented by young woman who I don't think was an attorney..had wrong file. Man felt sorry for her I think..offered to age 50. She advised me to take it..had no time to think. Worked since before 15 yrs old live on less than 900 month. So unfair..is there anything I can do? Thank you
Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth,
My wife has been on SS disability for several years and draws a modest $614 per month. She didn't have an extensive work career. I am 65 and have been drawing my SS for almost a year. My draw is $2327 per month. She will turn 62 in December of 2020. Can she draw off of my SS, and if so, what would she qualify for? Thanks, Wayne
Hi Wayne,
Results will differ based on your specific case and filing strategy.
