Social Security Overpayments

Do You Have Any Advice Or Guidance For Us?

My 47 year old son with Down Syndrome and an incomplete left had received a letter in 2021 saying that in 2020 he had been overpaid by Social Security DD a total of approximately 18k. We were told to fill out an Overpayment Recovery form. We sent it in --they claimed they never received it even though I sent it by fed ex and I have a receipt that it was sent. I needed to go to Congresswoman Rice's office who offered to fax it to me. After many months they got back to us.

Why Is Social Security Expecting Me To Repay My Mother's Overpayment?

I too have the same problem with Social Security as your 2020 article from overpayment my mother received while drawing worker’s compensation/social security or whatever.

I got the same letter & conversations almost word for word as the single mother & young man in your article.

I got a social security lawyer who helped with all paperwork for Free.

I still lost & now that I’m receiving SSDI. SSA has come after me for repayment from my mother’s overpayment from the 1970’s of almost $3,000.00.

Can You Give Me Some Insight?

I started receiving disability in 2018. At that time myself and my two minor children all three received a back payment check. Up until that time from 2016 up until that time my son was receiving a Survivor benefit from his father who passed away in January of 2016. He turned 18 in September and I filled out the appropriate paperwork to have him continue to receive his check until May when he when he is to graduate. Somehow a date. Wrong and my son stop receiving his disability check from me the past 2 months.

How Do I Get My Full Benefit Payments Resumed?

I have been talking to SS for over a year about an over payment that was paid in full in April., I continue to have $184.00 taken from monthly benefits and would like to know how I get my actual benefits from SS.

Hi. If you've repaid your overpayment in full and if Social Security is still withholding part of your benefits, then your repayment must not yet have been entered into Social Security's computer system. The reason for that could depend on where you sent the repayment, or it could just reflect a backlog in handling such repayments.

Do You Have Any Suggestions?

Hello... My husband's monthly benefit has not been received for 2 months. When he called SSA, he was told that it was because he had an overpayment, due to also working. He never received a letter notifying of this. This was verified by SSA (national and local). There is no letter on file. He wants to pay back the overpayment but cannot do so without a REMITTANCE ID, which was to be shown on the letter that he NEVER received, and SSA confirmed, one was never sent, yet they stopped his payments, without ANY notice. Our local SSA said he needed to contact the national SSA.

What Are The Laws Regarding My Situation?

I received a letter from Social Security in June 2021 stating they overpaid me $29438.00 and expect to recover this amount, or with take my full benefit starting Sept. They claim I have collected on 2 or more records from the first day I applied ,Feb 2010, for early SSI benefits. I had been married for 23 yrs, my ex spouse and I were both 63 yrs old at the time I applied for early benefits in Feb /2010. I had been divorced from him since 2004 and I had remarried in 2007.

How Will My Husband's Overpayment Affect Us?

Larry, my husband is 55 years of age and has been collecting Social Security Disability benefits for about 6 years now. He told me recently that he was notified by SSA that he earned too much, because he held a part-time job as supplement income, and may have to pay the excess earnings back. I'm very concerned about how his situation will affect my future earnings, if at all. We've been married almost 28 years, so I've surpassed the 10 year threshold. I should be able to draw from his benefit as the higher wage earner, but I'm not certain how the l news will affect us.
