What Can I Do About My Overpayment?
Hi Larry,
Hi Larry,
I will try to be brief in my explination. I received SS disability benefits for several years and eventually SS determined I could return to work. My doctor and I disagreed and I opted to be paid while appealing this decision. The decision stood and I returned to work. That year of benefits was determined to be an over payment and I enrolled in a payment plan I could not really afford so I appealed for waiver of over payment collection.
Overpayment of $11,833.00 in benefits to my daughter and I after her dad passed away and she was in the hospital dying needed a liver transplant. SSA started garnishing my wages on August 11, 2017. I kept a track record in excel to know when the day would come for this to be all over. Even going out on disability from work last year in 2018, my tax refund was taken as well as another refund from the IRS in November. Once I notice that I no longer owed them according to my records as well as my pay statements. I contacted SSA and they stated I still had a balance of $1961.
My sister is 64 and is drawing her late husbands social security. It is about $1200.00 per month. She is working and makes about $21,000.00 a year staying with the elderly. Last year she was notified by the SS and they stated she makes too much money and they stopped her SS benefit payments. They put her behind 8 months on her bills. They also stated that when she turns 66 this November she could get the money owed her. Problem is she is getting way behind and she is going to have to borrow money. Is this correct?
I received disability benefits for a closed period (1998-2002). I started receiving benefits in 2003 after I had started a part time job. I was notified in 2004 that I was overpaid $43,388. In 2008 I received a check for beneficiary benefits for my son in the amount of $16.706. I did not cash that check and didn't understand why they would send me a check if I was overpaid. I had the attorney that filed for benefits working on resolving this over the years. The attorney file a request for reconsideration, and a waiver. None of which I received copies of or results from SSA.
Social security sent me a letter stating that I was overpaid by almost $1400. I am 34 years old and never collected benefits. So when I called they said it was from 1995-1997-I was 11 years old and it was my father who ended up collecting the benefits when he had a work injury and wasn't able to work. His SSN is even on the letter, but they now have it under my account and it came addressed to me. They are threatening to garnish wages etc. I do not talk to my father and as far as I know he is homeless.
My wife took S/S in 2017 at age 62. As a corporate executive, she retired/cashed out $400K which caused her Social Security benefits of $25,200 to be taxed @85%. We now have received a bill from the SSA requesting a payback of $25,278. Can we request an amendment to our 2017 or 2018 tax return as we paid over $7K (35% tax bracket) on the monies received that the SSA is asking for it back??
Hi,
Please help. This is absolutely the worst as bad if not close to Social Security going after that young boy for overpayment. July will make a year since I filed for disability I got denied not enough work credits found out by calling never received a letter informing me of the decision. With in the time limit I filed for SSI. Waited five more months only to go into my local office to be completely and utterly stuperfied that I would only be receiving $675. By the way I live in my car.
Hi Larry:
I collected six months back payments as an ex spouse. Six months later, I changed to my SS account and also collected six months back payments.
I've received a bill for the six months back payments paid from MY account.
1. Can I collect six months back payments from both the ex spouse account ( his SS#) and my account ( my SS#)?
2. If not, can I request SS to reclaim the back payments from the ex spouse account? This is a lesser amount than that of my own.
