Spousal Benefits

Did Social Security Compute My Spousal Benefit Rate Correctly?

Hi, I just claim my spousal SS benefits and I believe I am not getting the amount of money I should. My personal SS benefits now is $781 and my husband’s SS benefits $2005. I claimed my spousal SS benefits 8 months before full retirement age (66) and according to SS benefits website I should receive 47.22% of my husband primary insurance amount. I was told by the SS benefits agent that I will get added $78 at my own SS benefits. Is this correct ? Thank you in advance for your reply.

What Is The Right Answer?

Hi

I am 67 and applied for and suspended my SS benefit before the April 2016 deadline. My wife turned 64 in November 2017 and applied for her SS benefits based on her own work record. At the same time, I applied for spousal benefits on her work record which a SS employee at the face-to-face, local office said that I could do. After a long delay, I received a letter saying that my application was denied because I could receive greater benefits by applying for my own benefits.

Does My Wife Have To Switch To Spousal Benefits When I File, Or Can She Wait Until Her Full Retirement Age?

My wife is almost 3 years older than myself (I am then larger wage earner) and started collecting her SS benefits (reduced) at age 62. I plan to retire in a few more years when I am 62 1/2. Does my wife have to do the switch to take the spousal benefit then when I file for SS benefits (she will be 65 and 4 months) or can we wait 8 more months after I retire and am already collecting my benefits to when she turns 66 to do the switch over?

Which Of These Calculation Methods Is Correct?

Larry, thank you for this website. In my internet research, I find conflicting answers to the following scenario:

My wife and I will both turn 62 this year. Her PIA is less than half of mine. Her PIA is $930. My PIA is $2,800. If we both wait until age 70 to begin drawing benefits, her regular benefit will be approximately $1,200 due to the DRC. How would her spousal benefit be calculated at that time?

How Much Will My Wife Receive As A Spouse?

Both my wife and I were born in 1953. I started collecting SS early (62). My earning were a little more than twice my wife. Does that fact that I started collecting early affect her spousal benefit or will it be based on my FRA benifit? My plan was to have her do a restricted application at 66 for spousal benefits only then switch to hers at 70. I have been given some advise that say my wife benefit will be based on my current reduced benefit and that we both would have had to reach full retirement age to have her do a restricted application.

Can I Collect Spousal Benefits At Age 65?

My wife is 70 and collecting Social Security. I will turn 65 on April 10 2018. Can I collect spousal benefit then?

Hi,

You couldn't file just for spousal benefits any time before your full retirement age (FRA) of 66 without also being deemed to file for your own retirement benefits. In that case you would only receive essentially the higher of the two rates and your benefit rate would be reduced for age.

Do I Qualify To File A Restricted Application For Spousal Benefits Only?

I am a retired Fed Gov't employee under CSRS (the old retirement system) which I did not to put into SS. I never put in the required quarters to get SS. I have been told I should be able to get benefits under my husbands SS as his spouse, as well as I cannot get spousal SS due to my retirement. According to the SS Office, I cannot received this SSI benefits due to income I over $2000 a month coming in, plus saving.
