Spousal Benefits

Will My Wife Be Eligible For Spousal Benefits In The Future If She Files For Her Own Benefits Now?

I am 60 and my Wife is turning 65. If she applies for benefits now under her work record - will she be eligible for spousal benefits when I reach 65 in another 5 years?

Hi,

Possibly, but could only receive additional spousal benefits if you are drawing your benefits and if her own full retirement age rate (PIA) is less than 50% of your PIA.

You and your wife may want to strongly consider using the maximization software available on this website to determine your best overall strategy for claiming Social Security benefits.

How Are Spousal Benefits Calculated When The Spouse Is Not Yet FRA And Took Their Own Benefits Early?

Given that the high earning person waits until FRA to claim their benefits, with a known PIA. What PIA would the low earning spouse use to subtract from this PIA to calculate their excess spousal benefit if they are not at their FRA and have taken their own benefit early? I know it would be their PIA at FRA if they were at FRA.

Can I Receive Spousal Benefits Until I File For My Own Benefits At Age 70?

Hope this is an easy one for you. I am a 66 year old man (birthday,10/19/1951).My wife is 64(birthday,7/25/1953),and is currently receiving about $1700/mo.from Soc. Sec. Disability .I am still working. If I took my benefit now it would be about $2550/mo,but I would like to wait to age 70 when it will be over $3200/mo.In the meantime,is there any way by holding off getting my own benefit now, that I could receive a spousal benefit from her until I reach age 70?Thanks so much.

Would Filing For Spousal Benefits Hurt My Husband's Own Age 70 Benefits?

I could not get a straight answer from the person at Social Security. I am 66 next month and have applied for my SS which is only going to be $400 since I was an at home mom most of my life. My husband is 67 and still working and plans to until age 70 and then apply for his SS. (We missed the old program of file and suspend by a few days). Because I applied I got a call of SS and they suggested that my husband applies and takes half of mine. I kept asking her if he did that then wouldn't that hurt his benefit at age 70. We want to have the full age 70 benefit and not less.

When Can I Receive Half Of My Husband's Amount?

I'm 61 and I receive disability social security at $1,000 per month. My husband is 67 and , although not yet collecting, is eligible for $3,000 per month. When can I receive half of his amount?

Hi,

You must be at least age 62 and your husband must be drawing his benefits in order for you to potentially qualify for spousal benefits. However, your spousal benefits will be permanently reduced for age if you start drawing them before your full retirement age.

Is There Any Disadvantage If I Claim Retroactive Benefits?

Hi Larry, I have a question on retroactive benefits. My husband, now age 68, claimed his SS benefit at age 66. I’m age 67, retired last year, and I have decided to file a Restricted Application to claim a spousal benefit now and switch to my own higher benefit at age 70. Is there any disadvantage for me to claim a six-month retroactive benefit for my spousal benefit? I have read some of your guidance from earlier this year to use caution with a retroactive claim for a person’s own benefit, but is there much risk with a late claim for a spousal benefit? Thanks. Leslie
