Hi. A lot of people have reported getting the same misinformation as you apparently did, so it sounds like Social Security may have a training or hiring problem. In any case, you are allowed to voluntarily suspend your Social Security retirement benefits between your full retirement age (FRA) and age 70, . . . Read More

If I Remarry Will I Lose My Social Security?

I am a 73 year old single female. If I remarry, will I lose my social security?

Hi. The answer to your question depends of what type of benefits you currently receive. If you're receiving either Social Security retirement benefits based on your own earnings history or survivor benefits on the account of a deceased former spouse, then getting remarried won't affect your benefits. If you receive divorced spousal benefits on the account of a living ex-spouse, though, then a remarriage would likely cause those benefits to be terminated ( . . . Read More

Should This Wife Voluntarily Suspend Her Benefits?

Wife (W) is receiving approximately $2,500 per month in SS retirement benefits, having started her benefits when she was 64 years 6 months so that her husband (H) could receive spousal benefits on her record. She is currently 67 years 2 months. H, currently 69 years 10 months, is deferring receipt of his retirement benefits until age 70 at which time he will receive approximately $3,700 per month, which includes deferred retirement credits (DRCs).

W is trying to figure out whether (i) to suspend retirement benefits from July 2021 – when she is 67 years 4 months – until . . . Read More

Where In POMS Does It State That A Statutorily Blind Person Can Earn More Than Someone Who Is Disabled From A Different Impairment?

(1) If you are statutorily blind and receive SSDI, where in SSA's POMS does it state that once approved a statutorily blind person can earn more than someone who is otherwise determined to be disabled and entitled to SSDI? I cannot find anywhere that is states this. (2) SGA seems to be only that earned prior to eligibility. At this time an income limie on SSDI recipients (seems to be) is $940 while receiving SSDI and there seems to be no provision for a statutorily blind person to be allowed to earn more. Please clarify if I am wrong. (3) Does the EPE allow a statutorily blind . . . Read More

If You're Receiving SSID Is It Mandatory That You Switch To Retirement When You Reach Age 62?

When receiving ssid and you reach the age of 62 is it mandatory that you switch to retirement

Hi. If by SSID you're referring to Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits, then the answer to your question is no. No action is required when you reach age 62 if you're drawing SSDI benefits. SSDI benefits automatically convert to regular Social Security retirement benefits at the same rate when you the recipient reaches their full retirement age (FRA).

However, people who receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) must file for any Social Security . . . Read More

How Can I Get My Medicare Part B Coverage Date Corrected?

Trying to enroll in Medicare and Part B says starting date is July 2022 . It should be July 2021. It must of been a typo I do we get this corrected?

Hi. You can only enroll in Part B of Medicare during an enrollment period. Your initial enrollment period (IEP) starts 3 months prior to the month you reach age 65, and ends with the 3rd month after you reach age 65. If you're not in your IEP, then you can only enroll for Part B in a special enrollment period (SEP) or a general enrollment period (GEP).

Then most recent GEP enrollment period ended March . . . Read More

Why Is My Husband Having Problems Receiving Spousal Benefits?

I am a US citizen on Social Security Disability since 2010; My husband is British and we married in 2007. I was always on the mindset that my husband would be entitled to spousal benefits. I asked again in December 2020 and received a reply that he was indeed entitled to them (he is 65, 66 this year). The message asked for a few simple questions, told me to reply with the answers, and they'd take it from there. I replied the same day and haven't ever received another message! I've emailed repeatedly for a response, even Facebook messages! and nothing. I am lost and stumped as . . . Read More

Can My Friend Sell Her Home If She's Receiving SSDI Benefits?

My friend is on S.S.D.I. and owns a large home she can't take care of. Can she sell and transfer the monies to a new home?

Hi. If your friend is only receiving Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits, selling her home wouldn't affect her benefits regardless of how much the home sells for or what she does with the proceeds. The only type of benefits that Social Security administers that could be affected by the sale of a home is Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSI is a needs based benefit, so any change in a person's assets or income can potentially . . . Read More

Hi. As long as you aren't currently legally married, you could potentially qualify for benefits on your first spouse's Social Security record provided that you meet the other requirements. For example, assuming that your ex is still living, in addition to you being unmarried both you and your ex would need to be at least age 62 or he would have to be . . . Read More
