Will My DCP Be Subject To The Windfall Elimination Provision?
I am expecting to lose my job at a non-SS participating employer (the state) in the next few months. I have a DCP and will be able to roll over the entire account which I plan to do. I'm not eligible for retirement so I'll just be unemployed. Will that DCP be subject to the "Windfall" elimination provision (I put it in quotes because it's hardly a windfall). Thanks.
Hi. It certainly sounds like the roll over of your DCP would be considered by Social Security to be a lump sum distribution in lieu of a non-covered pension, and could therefore result in a . . . Read More

Can I Get A Replacement Social Security Card At A Different Office From Where The Original Was Issued?
I used to live in sacramento ca and my ssc and my childrens were stolen, we currently live in costa mesa ca. am i able to get replacement cards here in costa mesa or do i need to go to sacrament ca?
Hi. Social Security is a federal program, so you can apply for replacement Social Security cards at any Social Security office. You may even be able to apply online: https://www.ssa.gov/myaccount/replacement-card.html.

Is It Correct That I Can File For Reduced Retirement Benefits And Disability Benefits?
hi I am 58 and plan to retire at 62. I have significant hearing impairment and tinnitus. I wear hearing aids in both ears and hearing loss/speech recognition is moderate to severe fairly equally in both ears. I struggle at work and most things must be repeated more than once depending upon the person's speech tone/register. I have a home and cannot afford to have any months or years without income. I have been told by an atty that I should apply for ss disability just prior to retiring at 62 ..and that I could start receiving early retirement SS benefits while waiting for . . . Read More

Can I Get My Second Husband's Social Security?
My 3rd husband died 3Spril 2021. I'm collecting social security from my dead 4th husband. Can I get my second husband social security? We were married over 10 years.
Hi. I'm sorry for your loss. You can't get an ex-spouse's actual benefits, but you can potentially collect survivor or auxiliary benefits on their account if you meet all of the requirements (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0403.html). However, you can't collect benefits on the record . . . Read More

Should I Withdraw All Of My Social Security And Invest It?
Larry, what is gonna happen if social security runs out in 2034 and I am still alive, needing it? Should I withdraw it all and invest it? Sarah
Hi Sarah. Social Security isn't going to simply stop paying benefits at some future time. Social Security will always be receiving income from current workers in the form of Social Security taxes, barring some massive overhaul of the program initiated by Congress. Therefore, Social Security will always be collecting taxes from current workers with which they can pay Social Security recipients. The problem is that . . . Read More

If My Ex-Spouse Dies Am I Allowed To Claim His Benefit If It's More Than Mine?
Hi Larry, I took your advice a few years back and retired at 71. I am now 73, divorced in 1991, have not remarried. I was my former Spouse's second wife. He now has a 3rd. If he dies, am I allowed to claim his benefit if it is more than mine? ((I have not remarried) Sarah
Hi Sarah. I'm assuming that you were married to your ex-spouse for at least 10 years. In that case, then yes if your ex dies and if his benefit rate is higher than yours it sounds like you'd qualify for survivor benefits. You'd basically only qualify for the higher of your ex's benefit . . . Read More

Does WEP Apply In My Case?
I will be eligible for full retirement in February of 2022 (born in December of 1955) at which time I will have accrued 21 years with substantial earnings in the US. I have also worked overseas for a period of 18 years without SS withholdings and I will be using US credits to get a pension there as well. My overseas overall pension will be reduced by 30% because of the fact I will also receive US retirement benefits. Does WEP apply in my case and if so how will my SS retirement benefits be affected?

Is This The Best Strategy For Us?
I will be turning 70 this summer and will file for Social Security shortly. My wife recently turned 62. I have read that couples can maximize their joint Social Security payouts by having the lower earner (my wife) sign up as soon as possible at age 62 while the higher earner (me), older than my wife, and has a shorter life expectancy, so she will get a smaller payout based on her own working record. But she'll get bumped up to the higher survivor's benefit when I pass away. Is this the best marital strategy for us to boost our total payout?
