Does Receiving A QPP Pension Qualify As Canadian Sourced Income?

I understand that a charitable donation to a charity in Canada is tax deductible on the U.S. 1040 tax return if there is any Canadian sourced income. Does receiving a QPP pension qualify as Canadian sourced income? The QPP income gets lumped in with U.S. Social Security income so not sure if it is identified on the form.

Hi,

I'm sorry, but I'm unable to answer your question. My expertise is limited to Social Security benefits, not tax regulations.

Best, Jerry

Should I Start Drawing My Benefits Before The Month I Reach Age 70?

I turn 70 in October 2021. People tell me if I file for benefits to start earlier in 2021 than October, I'll get almost the same amount. Should I do that? I'm still working so my plan would be to bank all or most of the SS benefits.

Hi,

That's up to you, but if you start drawing your benefits before you turn age 70 your permanent benefit rate would be 2/3rds of 1% lower for each month that you start drawing prior to the month you reach age 70. Furthermore, if you start drawing effective with any month other than January or the month you reach age 70 . . . Read More

What Will Happen If My Wife Is Drawing Child In Care Spousal Benefits And Then Applies For Her Own Benefits?

Hi, Larry,

I will be 65 years old soon and my wife will be 59 and wee have a disabled child since birth, he is 25 and receives SSI. My PIA is much higher than my wife. If I decide to file for SS at age 65 and file for my wife as child in care person, the maximum family benefit will be applied on my record. I wonder what happen when my wife reach a retirement age and she wants to apply on her record?
Thank you in advance.

Can I Start Withdrawing My Social Security At Age 55?

My learn social security takes my top 35 yrs worked to calculate my retirement social security benefits I can retired at 55 yrs old will social security allow my the start withdrawing my social security at 55

Hi,

No. The only way that you could possibly collect Social Security benefits that are based on your own earnings history prior to age 62 is if you qualify for Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits. Nor could you elect to voluntarily opt out of Social Security and withdraw the taxes that you've contributed to the program.

The home was all paid for when I got it. Do I have to report it to SSI and SSDI. I get both. And how long do I have to report it. Thank you

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss. Yes, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is needs based, so if you receive SSI then you need to report any changes in your assets, such as the sale of a home you own. Whether or not you would continue to . . . Read More

Can My Husband's Ex-Wife Get Some Of His Social Security?

My husband was marry before it last about 4,years can she get some of his ss

Hi,

No. If your husband's previous marriage lasted for less than 10 years, his ex-wife could not qualify for any benefits from his record.

I should point out, though, that even if your husband did have an ex-wife who was eligible for divorced spousal benefits from his record, those benefits would not reduce the amount of benefits that could be paid to your husband or to anyone else who qualifies for benefits based on his Social Security earnings history. Would I Be Able To Get My Benefit Adjusted?

My birthday is February 12.,1943. I retired January 1st 2007 and took my first SSA that month. I f I would have waited until February that year I would have been 65 and got seven per cent more? Would I be able to get an adjustment?

Hi,

The answer to your question is no, but your benefit rate would not be 7% higher if you had waited one additional month before starting to draw your benefits. When a person starts drawing their Social Security retirement benefits prior to their full retirement age (FRA), their benefit rate is reduced by 5/9ths of 1% for . . . Read More

Does Collecting Unemployment Benefits Affect SSDI Benefits If A Person's TWP Has Been Completed?

Hello Larry, I just found you & have a deadline tomorrow (12/17/20) for redetermination protest for unemployment (I made an error on a form). I receive SSDI but accidentally used my TrialWorkPeriod as a substitute teacher/teacher aide (no pay stubs & went slightly over 5 different months). Here we are in the CV19 pandemic & have been able to do a touch a subbing (many subs seeking work!) while maybe getting retro unemployment. I've read that one is able to receive unemployment & not have impact on SSDI. However, I haven't read the ability for one to receive it . . . Read More

Can I Defer My Retirement Benefits In Order To Get A Higher Benefit Later?

I have been on disability for a number of years. I turn 66 this month (December) and received a letter stating my benefit will convert from disability to retirement. Same payment.
Can I choose to defer my retirement payments in favor of increasing the benefit?

Hi,

You could elect to voluntarily suspend your benefits between full retirement age (FRA) and age 70 in order to earn delayed retirement credits (DRC), but you couldn't be paid disability benefits while your retirement benefits are suspended. You are not allowed to simply defer the . . . Read More

Yes, Social Security still pays spousal benefits, however, no one born after January 1 1954 is allowed to file for spousal benefits without also filing for their own benefits at the same time unless they have an eligible child in their care ( . . . Read More
