Can I Draw On My Ex's Benefits?
I am on disability and social security now. I'm currently 63. Can I draw on my ex's benefits. We were married 13 years.
Hi,
Assuming that your ex-spouse is living and that what you're receiving is either Social Security disability (SSDI) or Social Security retirement benefits, the only way that you could be eligible for additional benefits as a divorced spouse is if a) your ex is either drawing his Social Security benefits or he's at least age 62, and b) your ex's primary insurance amount (PIA) is more than twice as much as your own PIA. Does The Higher Earnings Test Limit Apply For The 12 Month Period Prior To The Month You Reach Full Retirement Age?
I will reach full retirement age in January 2022. I would like to start collecting Social Security in February 2021 as I will not earn more than $48,000 in 2021. My question is does Social Security count 12 months before your normal retirement age as the higher earnings amount or do they use calendar months? Thank Larry
Hi,
No. The applicable annual earnings test limits are based on calendar years. If you reach full retirement age in February 2022, you won't be eligible for the higher earnings test limit until the calendar year of 2022. The lower . . . Read More

Could I Leave My Home To My Grandson Without It Affecting His SSI?
I WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE MY HOME TO MY GRSON WHO RECIIEVE S SSI .HOW EVER I LIVE IN CALIF HE LIVES IN WYOMING COULD HE SELL MY HOME , USE THE MONEY FOR A HOME THERE IN WYOMING WITH OUT IT AFFECTING HIS SSI?
Hi,
Assuming that your grandson is unmarried, he couldn't have assets of more than $2000 and still be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). A home in which an SSI recipient lives is excluded from counting as an asset, though, so if your grandson buys and lives in a home he could potentially qualify for SSI if he meets the other . . . Why Was My Benefit Payment Deposited Early This Month?
Hello Larry!
I have been receiving my SS check on the second Wednesday of the month since it began. Today, Nov.10th is a Tuesday and I see my SS has been already deposited to my bank account. Any reason for the day early rather then my usual Wednesday? My birthday is November 7th. Thanks for answering this question. Doris
Hi Doris,
Whenever a person's normal monthly payment day falls on a weekend or federal holiday, their Social Security benefit is delivered on the last business day prior to the weekend or holiday. Your regular payment day . . . Read More

Do I Need To Worry About My Benefits If I Move To Germany?
Hi Larry,
I’m 58, on full disability due to 4 back surgeries and my lady is a German national still living in Germany. We have been traveling back and forth since 2012. We would like to be together permanently and I would like to move there because she has 5-7 years to retire. We aren’t interested in getting married at this time, but I’m a bit nervous about moving there being in disability..
Thanks
