How Will It Impact My Benefits If I Go Back To Work Part-Time?
I quit my engineering job a year and a half ago to stay home and take care of our child. My husband continues to work full time. If I go back to work part time, how will that impact my social security benefits? I am wondering if it would be better for me to stay home until I can go back to my engineering job full time or if working part time in a lower paying job for a few years wouldn't hurt my social security benefits. I am over 50. Who should I seek out to get help with retirement planning? Thank you
Hi,
You can't hurt your benefit rate by working . . . Read More

Would Social Security Recognize This Marriage As Lasting For 10 Years?
if a man and woman in California are married for 5 years get a divorce but continue living together, purchase a home together and 2 years later remarry with the second marriage lasting another 3 years would the state of California and SSA recognize their marriage as lasting 10 years
Hi,
California doesn't recognize common law marriages, so the only way that the couple you mention could qualify for divorced spousal benefits is if they were married for at least 10 consecutive years. Two marriages separated by a divorce can sometimes be considered as . . . Read More

Can My Wife Suspend Her Social Security And Then Restart Them At Age 70?
Here's my scenario:
... My wife turned 64 on Sept 9, 2020. (born in 1956)
... She files now for early SS
... I was born in 7-28-53... so I file for SPOUSAL BENEFITS on her SS
... when I turn 70, in 2023, I take my FULL SS.
... can my wife then SUSPEND HER SS. (She will be past her FRA) and then let her SS grow until she turns 70 and then claim ???
thank you so much.

Am I Eligible For A Survivor Benefit?
Hi Larry! Can you please provide an information regarding my situation: My UK citizen husband passed away last year. He was receiving the UK state pension and US Social Security as he worked in the US but wasn't the US citizen. My question is - am I eligible to receive survivor benefit, or mother's benefit, if I am caring of a child under 16? My daugjter is 9 and my husband wasn't her biological father, we got married when she was 2 years old and from 2014 I am receiving a Child Benefit for her. We are the UK citizen from 2016. If I am eligible for the benefit how can I claim . . . Read More

If I Started Collecting Benefits At Age 62, Will I Get A Benefit Increase If I Quit Working?
Hi Larry, I started collecting ss benefits at 62. i continued to work always under the max amount. I am now 66 ( full retirement age ) and thinking of quitting work altogether. Will i get an increase in my ss benefits ?
Hi,
The only thing you mention that might result in a benefit rate increase is if your recent yearly earnings were higher than the amount you earned in one of the previous years that were used to calculate your benefit rate. Social Security retirement benefits are based on an average of a person's highest 35 years of Social Security . . . Read More

Is There Any Way For Me To Get Full Retirement Since I Was Forced To File For My Benefits Early?
I was on SSI, at 63 I was notified that since I had retirement I had to take early retirement. Is there anyway I can get full retirement since I had no choice in this per SSA.
Thank you,
Lori
Hi Lori,
No. You could have waited until your full retirement age (FRA) to start drawing unreduced Social Security benefits, but Social Security would then have stopped paying you Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments. One of the requirements for receiving SSI is that you must file for any other benefits for which you qualify as soon as you . . . Read More

If I Get Remarried Would I Lose Any Of My Monthly Income?
Im a 69 year old widow receiving my husbands SSI as he passed away 2 years ago.If i remarried would i lose any amount monthly that i get.Im also receiving teamsters two.Thank you
Hi,
I'm sorry for your loss.
I'm assuming by SSI you're referring to Social Security widow's benefits, not Supplemental Security Income. Your Social Security widow's benefits would not be affected by a remarriage, since you are over age 60. My only area of expertise is Social Security, so I can't tell you whether or not a remarriage would affect your other pensions . . . Read More

Which Date Would Be My Onset Date For Social Security Disability Benefits?
Thank you for maintaining an excellent website. I am applying for Social Security Disability. My last day at work was October 31, 2019 and I left work because I became disabled. Prior to terminating my employment, I was on sick leave (because of the same disabling condition) starting October 20, 2019 until my final official day at work on October 31, 2019. When applying for Social Security Disability would my onset date be October 20, 2019 rather than November 1, 2019? If approved for SSDI, would I receive SSDI payment for the FULL first month of SSDI payments (even though I . . . Read More

Why Won't Social Security Give Me Information On All Of My Options?
HI Larry, I have a dilemma I hope you can help me with. I am turning 69 and my wife will be 70 this December. She began collecting her Social Security about 15 months ago and I have been collecting spousal benefits. We needed the money and due to the fact that I was the higher earner we decided on our collecting in this way until I turn 70. We have our own business, home day care, and due to Covid have not reopened yet. We do plan on continuing to work but we are looking at all of our options. I went online to Social Security to check out my future benefit possibilities and I . . . Read More
