Hi,

For the benefit of other readers, SSI is the abbreviation for Supplemental Security Income. SSI is a needs based program administered by the Social Security Administration, but the benefits aren't paid from the Social Security trust fund. Only people who are either blind, disabled, or age 65 or older can qualify for SSI payments.

SSI payments can supplement a person's other income, such as Social . . . Read More

How Do I Get Widower Benefits?

How do I get widower benefits I was married 22 years he passed away 10 years. Is there any way I can get widower benefits because I can't live on 728 a month that all I get

Hi,

The only way that you could get widow(er) benefits is by filing an application with Social Security. You can initiate that process by calling 800-772-1213.

I have no way of knowing whether or not you'll qualify for widow(er) benefits, though. If you're drawing your own benefits, the only way you'd be able to get additional widow(er) benefits is if your deceased spouse' . . . Read More

Can My Boyfriend And I Qualify For Our Social Security Without Being Married?

Boyfriend and I have been together 40 yes can we qualify for our ss without being married

Hi,

You and your boyfriend could potentially qualify for any Social Security benefits to which you're entitled based on your own earnings histories, but it's unlikely that you could qualify for spousal or survivor benefits on each other's records. However, if your relationship is recognized as a legal marriage under state law, such as a common-law marriage, you may then be able to qualify for spousal or survivor benefits.

Best, Jerry

How Much Can I Earn Without Jeopardizing My Disability Benefits?

I am 57 and have been on disability for 10 years. I am contemplating trying to get a Flexjob where I can work some hours from home, as I am in a high risk group for Covid 19. The reason I am looking to pick up some work, if I can is my husband has been furloughed since April with no end in sight and my education and work experience along with the current work conditions I have found jobs in my field on line. My question is how much can I earn without jeopardizing my disability? I'm positive it would not be a problem to re-apply, but it is a pain. Although the last time I . . . Read More

Can I Get Spousal Benefits With My Disability Benefits?

CAN I HET SPOUSAL BENEFIT WITH MY DISABILITY BENEFITS, AND IF THEY CANGETHE BENEFIT TO MY SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS CAN I STILL GET SOME OF THE SPOUSE'S BENEFITS MONEY?

Hi,

I assume you mean that you're drawing Social Security disability (SSDI) benefits. In that case you could only be eligible for spousal benefits while your spouse is living if 50% of your spouse's primary insurance amount (PIA) is higher than your own PIA. A person's PIA is equal to their Social Security retirement benefit rate if they start drawing their benefits at full retirement . . . Read More

Can My Social Security Benefit Be Increased?

I have been getting special security since 2017 when I turned 65. I also quit full time teaching.
Since I quit my job I make more money now that I am a selling my art and am sought after to offer art workshops.
Can my social security benefit be increased (I make much more selling art than I did teaching.)

Also, my current Social security benefit is only about $1000 a month but my husband’s (retired at age 67 in 2018) gets about $1700. Should I be apply for spousal benefit as this is what confuses me the most.

Thanks, Sheila
