Do I Get More Money If My Husband Is Deceased?

I'm turning 65 in August my husband is dead do I get more money?

Hi,

I'm sorry for your loss.

You can't get both your own Social Security retirement benefit and a full survivor benefit at the same time. If you file for both you can only be paid the higher of the two benefit rates. However, you could potentially file for one type of benefit first, then file for the other benefit later.

For example, you could potentially file for survivor benefits now and then wait until age 70 to file for your own Social Security retirement benefits . . . Read More

Hi,

Yes, receipt of a federal CSRS survivor pension would have no effect on any type of Social Security benefits for which you may be eligible.

Hi Katie,

I'm sorry for your loss.

Unless you're disabled or you have an eligible child in your care, the earliest that you could qualify for survivor benefits on your deceased husband's Social Security record is at age 60 (https://www.ssa.gov/OP_Home/handbook/handbook.04/handbook-0401.html).

At What Age Will Social Security Transfer My SSDI Benefit To SSI?

I'm 56 years old on ssdi been on ssdi for 3 months what age wil they transfer me over to ssi?

Hi,

Just to be clear, SSDI is the abbreviation normally used for Social Security disability benefits. SSI is used as the abbreviation for Supplemental Security Income, which is a needs based benefit administered by Social Security. SSDI benefits would never convert to Supplemental Security Income (SSI), although a person could qualify for both SSDI and SSI if their SSDI rate is very low.

If you're receiving SSDI now at age 56 and you continue to be . . . Read More

Can You Give Me Any Advice?

I am born 1961 and my husband 1949. We took his SS at his 62 years and had a minor child at home. It was the recession and loss of work. No other choice, believe me. It saved us. My husband is 70 and still working. We don't know at what point he may not be working. I am not working but have been looking. We owe $120,00 on a modest (already downsized home. We only have 50,000 saved (CD's) and a small 401K (30,000) that could lose money. Old vehicles. No other debt. Two children are self-sufficient for now. We have 2 grandchildren. No inheritance or anything else forthcoming. We . . . Read More

Hi,

I can only answer questions about Social Security benefits, and stimulus payments are not Social Security benefits. You may want to refer to the IRS's website for information about stimulus payments: https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus-tax-relief-and-economic-impact-payments.

Can I Collect Widower Benefits At Age 66 And Let My Own Benefits Grow Until Age 70?

Hi Larry, my question is about widower benefits. I will be turning 66 on December 4th of this year. My wife of 30 years died when I was 52. I remarried when I was 64. My question is. I plan on working until age 70 and was wondering if I could collect widower benefits, from my first wife, at age 66 and let my own benefits grow until age 70. So I can collect at a higher 32% rate.

Thanks, Vince

Hi Vince,

Yes, that's certainly a possibility. In fact, if your earnings would permit payment of any widower's benefits prior to the month you reach age . . . Read More

Am I Missing Something?

In my divorce settlement it was calculated by the judge that I will receive $2,000 from SS per month at age 62 (I am forced to take it at 62 as required by the decree). My former husband has paid the maximum over the last 10+ years. I will be 62 in 2028. And I am assured that this SS at 62 for 2,000 combined with another 1,000 by my ex, that I will receive, at minimum, 3,000 per month. Since this is all that I can expect to live on, this is quite important to me. I was completely dependent on him as I stayed home to raise our kids. My question is that this simply doesn't sound . . . Read More
